QUESTION ABOUT THE PREMISE OF THE FILM "FATAL ATTRACTION" The movie is about a married man who has an affair with a seemingly normal woman and the woman turns out crazy and makes his life **cough** extremely difficult.
Got me thinking....
Was she really crazy or did him dumping her make her crazy?
Why was Michael Douglas's character the victim when HE CHOSE to break his marriage vows by bedding Alex not once, not twice but a few times? Spent an entire weekend with her and rode her raw so that she got pregnant by him.
Did this film make women look bad? You have a blind ass wife who doesn't know the tell tale signs of a cheatin' ass hubby; he acting all happy and desperate once she returns from a very short trip, she's getting constant hang up calls at her home, hubby is a tad rude once some single chick comes to his home-clearly he's uncomfortable as this visiting woman is all too familiar. Then there's Glen Close's character who goes buck ass crazy over a weekend of dick. Think about it...this woman is a professional and she's attractive and financially stable, can get dick whenever she wants yet she loses her mind over some married average looking summabitch??
Wouldn't it have been more realistic to have Michael's character just keep Glen as a side piece? In the real world, how many married men just hit it and quit it rather than keep it around for awhile?

I keep looking for the signs but I don't see it. She literally went crazy the morning after. It was done once she got that "thanx for the pussy" note.

EX-ACTLY.
Just because a woman has all the trappings of success, it does not exclude her from mental instability.
It's the mental and emotional instability that will cause the 3rd party to lash out. It's the old "negative attention is better than no attention at all" behavior that they misguidedly believe will attach them to that which they believe they are losing. It's their last ditch efforts to hold onto or regain dominance over a situation that has been snatched from their control, which is something that an unstable person with control and abandonment issues doesn't like at all.

I agree. But the fact that he basically used her to commit adultery (TRANSLATION: It takes two to cheat) made the mistress' then-hidden psychological problem much worse.

I always thought the premise of the movie was weak.
I'm firmly planted in denial

See, now, I think Jessica Walter from "Play Misty for Me" (Clint Eastwood movie) made Glenn Close seem like a schoolmarm.

(from Wiki): Alex Forrest was originally scripted to commit suicide at the end of the movie by slashing her throat. Her plan was to make it look as if Dan had murdered her, for which he would be arrested. Although Beth saves the day by finding a revealing tape that Alex had sent Dan and taking it to police, test audiences did not respond well.

It's too bad they didn't go with this.
The current movie ending is sooo generic.

Hard to blame Dan for her murder when the knife would have her fingerprints on it and still be in her hand at the time she slashed her own throat.
He almost killed her though in that one scene when they fought at her house. He could have cleaned up afterward and no one would have known.

Whoa! I didn't mean that that's why I like it! I just think it's a good movie.
Clint's character was a night dj, and she always called the station requesting "Misty". She met him in a bar (coincidence ), and he took her home with him. The rest... well... "Love Hurts. I saw that on the extras features of the dvd!!! They included the alternate ending with director's commentary
In addition to opening the public forum on adultery (I remember when the movie and the topic made the cover of TIME) the Alex Forrest character became the pop culture poster girl for extreme Borderline Personality Disorder. While many psychiatrists would argue that it's not an appropriate diagnosis because Alex (as a movie character) was so extreme, a lot of research papers have been convincingly written to show how she at least exhibits general characteristics of someone who is afflicted with this disorder ( although yes, they really made her extra wackadoo for cinematic effect). An excerpt from a research paper at papermasters.com:
Personality Disorder found in Fatal Attraction
Several years ago the movie “Fatal Attraction” brought public attention to a specific personality disorder termedBorderline Personality Disorder. In the film starring Glenn Close and Michael Douglas, the female character played by Glenn Close suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. The basic plot of the movie begins with Alex Forest (Glenn Close) and Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) having a weekend affair while Mrs. Gallagher is out of town. When Dan leaves Alex’s apartment at the end of the weekend the first display of Borderline Personality Disorder is revealed. Alex kicks him out in a sudden rage then returns to the doorway completely calm and almost sweet with her wrists cut. Completely consistent with a symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder, fear of abandonment, the afflicted individual will often make desperate attempts to maintain a relationship. By attempting suicide, Alex is able to keep Dan at her place another night. This episode is congruent with another symptom, which is the inability to control sudden impulses. When a situation appears out of control for the sufferer they will attempt an act of self-destruction such as Alex cutting her wrists. This first episode of Borderline Personality Disorder in the movie also presents unstable emotions, which is another significant symptom. In a matter of minutes, hours or days the sufferer can change emotions from complete euphoria to sudden rage. This was evident in Alex’s fit of anger when Dan said he must leave. Unfortunately, in the film “Fatal Attraction”, Borderline Personality Disorder is shown to the extreme. For instance, when Dan Gallagher tells Alex Forest that they are through, she begins to stalk and harass Dan by calling him at all hours of the day and at work and home. When she finds out she is pregnant and that Dan wants no part of the baby, her disorder begins to get violent. Individuals suffering form Borderline Personality Disorder rarely go to the violent extremes as portrayed in the movie. Alex kills the Gallagher’s pet rabbit and boils it in a pot in their kitchen. She also attempts to kill Mrs. Gallagher in the final scenes of the movie. Although some sufferers can become violent to themselves or others, the majority of Borderline Personality Disorder patients do not display this extreme behavior. Borderline Personality Disorder is the most common of the Personality Disorders, afflicting at least 2% of the total population. Statistics would point to out of control violence if every Borderline Personality Disorder patient was as violent as Alex Forest in the movie “Fatal Attraction”. In reality most sufferers do not go to this extreme.

He went back and banged her some more even AFTER she called him on the phone acting all nutty and mad cuz he left that first night while she was still sleeping. Even the scene in the park was creepy cuz he's acting like she's his woman. The rules for cheating are:
1) no PDA 2) no daytime romps- keep that shit in the night time where no one will see you. 3) no hand holding and hugging cuz it denotes genuine affection 4) no playing with the dog. the dog is essentially a family member. it's like getting attached to someone's kid.
He went far and beyond using her. He made it seem like their weekend fuck fest was actually going somewhere.

Alex seemed manic depressive to me.

Yeah, I had no sympathy for his character. I felt sorry for the wife and kid and dog...
I think Mrs. Galleger should have kicked his ass out after the cops got the body out the tub!

He is an idiot and asshole no doubt. But I wouldn't call it him using her. She knew what she was doing... I got the feeling she was the one that initiated the relationship...

Heck she should have kicked him out once Alex killed their rabbit or even after Alex kidnapped their kid. Wifey just kept giving ole Dan chance after chance after chance.

Genesia does not see films about out-of-control animals or people. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Girl, we then wouldn'na had no movie!
Was Beyonce's movie supposed to be an updated twist on the Fatal Attraction theme? I only saw the commercials (cause I'm not giving away my hard earned cheddar to watch Beyowulf throw out her script lines like she has a wad of cow-cud in her mouth).

they met at some party right? he saw her across the room and both he and his chubber married friend were both eyeing her. She only found him attractive but not the other guy.
Wasn't he also eyeing her at some business meeting? They kind of worked together or were going to work together on some book project. At some point he was going to make a move I think. She just went ahead and opened the door by taking him out for a drink. I blame his umbrella!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
well, not only that. It could have been an "innocent" drink... but then she says something like "why are you here with me instead of your wife"... I don't know for me it felt like she was going after him rather than the other way around...

Hahahahaha! I was just about to mention Beyonce's mess...

True!!! Why bring that up unless you've got fucking on your mind. I want to blame her but then I think of how women operate. We know without the guy even uttering a word whether he wants to bed us or not. Can't help thinking that she wouldn't have made that comment unless he wasn't letting her know on some level that he was willing. Of course... a minute later they are fucking in the hallway of her apartment.
Just can't see him as a victim in this film.
