when someone asks you for a favor...I'm lost on this.

What does it mean when someone says that ( can I call in favor- his words)?

I had a former boss ask me for a favor ( write a poem for his sister's wedding).

I said I'd help him out and told him about my business ( poetry business) and to let me know if he is interested.

I asked someone and they said it usually means for free...is this right?

Now I'm freakin out that I might have lost the chance...

any advice would be appreciated.

Favors are usually free, does he know you do that as a business? Maybe he didnt know it was a business and thought you just wrote poems for fun, hence the "favor"?

Ah ok. I'm not sure, it is in my email signature but in the email I wrote "you might not know but I've started a .......". Maybe.

I'm kinda freakin out now, I'm a big worrywart, unfortunately. I wish I could learn to change that part of me that frets over every little thing.

She agreed.

She didn't discuss pricing, yet own a poetry business.

So she wants to know if he expects it for free, under the term of "favor", and if she's obligated to do it at no cost because she already agreed.

Ohhh. lol

The boss probably wants it for free ya, but she's not entitled to do shit if she doesn't wanna.

Not only are you providing this service for free because it's a favor but the fact that your former boss said "can I call in a favor" suggests you owe him. Calling in a favor usually means a quid pro quo situation by which he once did a favor for you and now you have to reciprocate. That's what' I've been told anyways.

If you're concerned about the non-payment....just keep the poem brief and simple. In other words...don't give him your best work. wink

do you know his family? do you think you can write a poem for the occasion?

perhaps, it will lead to some new clients...i.e. that poem was beautiful, where did it come from

more likely than not, he's looking for it to be free.

if your heart isn't into it, write something simple

"The wedding cake is made of Lego

because we all know the bride is prego"

funny isn't it, sometimes friends don't really value what you do, they are only about what they can get from you without having to pay for it, yet really it's your friends that should be the ones to support you as much as they can, I mean if they really ARE friends - they should at least insist on paying and let you be the one to give them an invoice with NO CHARGE on it, because YOU are a good friend.

I truly feel there's not much respect for folks in the creative fields. We always have to fight to get paid what we're worth. One time, it took me a year to collect $1500 on a job. Mfer kept dodging me.

Here are some 'Scarface' boxer shorts I designed. Also click on the 'lounge pants' link. I did three of them(Smokin' Tony, Every Dog, American Dream).
