Cheap Used Cars

I recently had an accident, and though the car is ok, the damage is high enough that it's technically totaled

So I have to shop for another cheap old car. I was driving a 95 Corolla, and it is super reliable but boring. My GF has a 98 Jetta which is more comfortable, but always has little things wrong with it. Still I like driving it a lot more than my Corolla, so I am tempted to be irresponsible & get a VW myself.

Does anyone have recomendations for cheap cars?

Even one a few years old?

Actually my gf had a rental Focus when her Civic was stolen, and I thought it was pretty nice. I will look at them.

Do you have one?

Ooh I think i'm going to like this thread. I've been looking at cars myself today.

I'm really a Toyota fan, so I think i'll end up getting an Avensis.... but I feel like I have to see what else is out there before I decide...

I had an '02 for a few years. I bought it in '07 for $4000. I dunno how much you want to spend when you say "cheap".

Citroen Picasso? Is that some homemade moonshine vehicle?

I have never heard of them, but on the other hand, you are fed up with the car, which a great selling point...

It's a lovely car and theres nothing wrong with it at all. We got it when my son was born and my daughter was 1. We needed the space for a double buggy and all the other crap that goes with babies. Now they're grown up and I would prefer a non-mpv.

I much prefer driving my husbands Corolla, but that only has 3 doors.

I have to agree about used Hondas and Toyotas. They last forever if you do the just the most basic maintenance.

VWs are not really bad but, as you said, there´s always something wrong with them unless you settle for a REALLY old one. In my opionion, you can´t go wrong with a decent Honda, a Toyota or better yet a Mercedes, depending on where you live (climate, gas prices, parking lot situation etc.). If I had to buy a car tomorrow, I´d choose a Mercedes for safety reasons alone. Believe me, I´m speaking from experience. Safety is VERY important, and reliability is also a must. Toyotas are very reliable, and so are Hondas...maybe even a bit more reliable than a Mercedes but a Mercedes is probably much safer if you happen to have an accident again. Keep in mind that there are huge differences when it comes to reliability between regular Mercedes and diesel models. The diesels are much more reliable than the regular ones.

I had never considered a Mercedes because I consider them to be out of my price range for both buying and for fixing, but they do seem to last forever. And definitely safer than a little toyota.

I hit a BMW and the damage to their car was minimal, my toyota was totaled
