HELP ME UNDERSTAND WHY WOMEN GET MARRIED...

Well one thread deserves another.

Now in this day and age where:

women have an equal opportunity to get a good education
have an equally good opportunity to get a decent job
are no longer marred by social expectations of sexual virtue
can go to the sperm bank to get knocked up...

Why are women wanting to get hitched? Half of marriages end in divorce, you will incur HIS debt, and after the divorce he's probably going to marry again and focus all his energies on the new wife and kids leaving you to struggle with your brood on your own. Plus it's a lot of work to be wifey, pal, girlfriend, momma, housekeeper, cook, laundromat, baby maker and accountant all at the same damn time.

confused

It's the dress and reception isn't it.

It's simple.

To torture their best friends into wearing these dresses and to have pictures to taunt them forever. biggrin

men can father babies until they die...women have a much shorter "shelf life" for making babies and putting together the whole package--kids, house, family, career. u need to supplement your income with alimony and child support to get ahead razz

not entirely true. while men have a longer shelf life for their sperm...they are more likely to produce offspring with genetic defects. the medical field is just now figuring out something that younger women married to old coots have known all along. Plus as men get older, not only does the quality of sperm deteriorate but the buggers are slower swimmers and will mostly yield girl babies. mother nature and father time still fuckin' us up. lol

As long as they can get a hard dick. I know, in-virto that's not the point and Viagra isn't a solution for all men either. wink

Just like with guys, I'd imagine that some marry because it's expected of them, some marry because they just want to be taken care of and/or have kids and some marry because they love their dude and want to be with him forever.

But I have some gfs that marry because having a husband completes them and makes them a real woman (in their minds).

I've never understod that kind of thinking myself.

As I got older getting married became less and less important to me. Growing up it was always, fall in love, get married, have a family. Then real life took over. I'd be satisfied to have a stable loving relationship at this point. No piece of paper or fancy dress required.

I'm the opposite.

I never, ever wanted to get married - until I met my husband. And it wasn't about a piece of paper or a fancy dress. I had inexplicably met someone whom I never wanted to be away from, who made me believe in marriage and building a forever relationship for the first time in my life.
It's what you make it.

I can understand why people choose to get married. But what I don't understand is the desire for large, expensive, extravagant weddings. I would just want to invite our parents and maybe 20 relatives/friends, and just tie-the-knot in my living room via my uncle who's a minister, lol. My Mother would create a beautiful dress for me, I'd probably pick out my groom's suit, and we'd save hundreds/thousands of dollars. All that long processional and excess people (bridesmaids, bands, etc) in a gigantic church is so not necessary to me. lol

Oh, really, lol? Ok then, since he would hopefully have good style and taste in clothing, he can pick it out, but it has to match my dress and be reasonably priced. lol

I agree with the rest of what you said, though. We had a really small, inexpensive wedding with no bridesmaids or groomsmen, etc. and fewer than 20 guests. We bought his suit and my entire outfit off eBay.

A solemn promise that what you're building together isn't temporary.

That may sound laughable considering how temporary many marriages seem to be, but I can speak only for myself. My marriage is a partnership for life.
