I honestly feel the problem stems from the 'Americanization' of Thailand which took place in the 50s and 60's and still persists today.

They're standards of beauty are based on Anglo-centric values. I at first believed they were bleaching their skin to appear higher class (the workers in the fields and vendors on the street are dark), but in fact after further observations--they're trying to look Anglo. They were those scary contacts to make their iris's look bigger. They bleach their skin. They die their hair caucasion colors. Hell, the Japanese students here all wear false eyelashes to increase the size of their eyes and 'westernize' their appearance. I seldom see a Thai female student who hasn't altered her appearance to look more western in some way.

I want to tell my students to be proud of their skin, their eyes, and their overall features, but it's not a battle one Ajaan can win. The 'Americanization' of Thailand won'g go away until Thais come into an new age of consciousness where they start thinking more critically. None of the colleges are really teaching this critical thinking to the measure that it needs to be taught.

I think we're actually on the verge of some type of revolution in Thailand though. I 'would give it between 5 and 10 years before the signs of it start blossoming. The Thais are ready for modernization. It's an interesting time to be in such a wonderful country. It doesn't hurt that there's so much hot snatch here either.

Thankfully Mon's never fully bought into all that BS because she was always a bit of an individual, but I still sometimes have to make a point to tell her how beautiful I think her dark skin is, how looking Thai is good and how her physical appearance doesn't need to be changed or specifically westernized. She dyes her hair brown, red or whatever, but I never get the feeling it's out of a desire to look western. She always goes back to black at some point when the colour bores her. Honestly, I couldn't live with one of those conformist girls. Nice ppl, almost all, but it would bore the shit out of me. Just a product of the particular, very powerful and long-standing socialization.

The Americanization of Thailand brought with it some positive values. But for the most part, there's a darker side to it that my students aren't aware of. To desire to 'look white' to them is nothing more than cosmetic, leaving the westerner like me (strange that I consider myself a westerner ) to brood over it's deeper, more sinister, meaning and consequences--a real shame considering how much hot snatch there is here.

A few of our RL friends have met Dan, they still talk to us. I guess we are blessed with very understanding friends/neighbours.


I consider my org friends RL friends. Most of them I have met and the ones that I haven't, I plan to or would love to in the future.
