Exclusive: ABC cancels 'Ugly Betty'

ABC has just informed Ugly Betty producers that the show’s current fourth season will be its last. What’s more, the network has trimmed the show’s episode order from 22 to 20.

Although not a complete shock given the show’s heinous ratings, the news is nonetheless a total bummer — particularly in light of Betty’s creative resurgence this season.

The good news is that ABC has given Betty’s bosses enough time to craft a satisfying series finale. Exec producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson confirmed as much in this joint statement: “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

Seems like that Wednesday night slot on ABC is a killer for shows, Eastwick (loved that show) was in that time slot and it too was cancelled by ABC.

It lost its way, though this gives BOT a better shot at renewal.

^Better Off Ted has been firing on all cylinders this year, its one of the only hand full of shows that have every made me laugh at loud while watching it. Why ABC didn't get behind this show and give it some promo's is beyond me. Its the best thing since Arrested Development.

U shouldn't be surprised. When they move a show to Fridays, that means they are ready to cancel it.

So true. I'm really beginning to loathe NBC and ABC. Four years is a good run but too often I get into a show only to have them cancel it a few episodes or a season later.

They do that because they can put the show in syndication and more money can be made on the show itself.

^unless things have changed most channels want 5 seasons for a show for syndication.

It usually is, but for 1h shows, they sometimes start syndication at season 4. I know Desperate Housewives, and a few others.
