What does "merge" mean? Are you sorting by Album instead of Artist? If you sort by Artist, Prince will obviously sort separately than Jay-Z.

I have no idea how to help you, but I can say I have the same problems with iTunes, once in a while.

Good luck in solving this. biggrin

I tagged jay-z's album as "the black album - jay-z" , i do the same for greatest hits just add the artist in the title.

That's one of the most annoying things about iPods - they merge albums with the
same title together!

All you need to do is make the album titles different and they will be separated
out again. Either by repeating the artist name as part of the album title or
changing the title in some other way. I always put speech marks around Prince's
"Black Album", since just like The Beatles' "White Album" it technically doesn't
have an actual name, and is just called "The Black Album" due to it's cover.

The same thing happens with "Greatest Hits" albums, so you always need to do
the same kind of thing with them too.

I am too. I do as much as I can (without being over-laborious) in the ID3 tag to keep things separate and unique. I get that way when I found a Japanese bonus track, or something like that, and I want to tag it on the album. I change the "____ of _____" track numbers, so the .....well, you get the idea.

I too am very meticulous with my itunes tagging... For all my boots, I also put in comments about every live recording (when, where, who with etc)... I guess I had too much time of my hands when I did that :p

I never do the comment thing, but I even keep stuff separate by putting "Disk 1 of 1" in most everything, as well as the year if possible. I don't worry about Album Artist or Composer, because that shiz takes a long time.

Back in the early days of Napster, I used to strip the ID3 tags clean. I am not sure what my logic was back then. I guess I didn't get it. So a lot of my songs had no ID3 tags.

Well, about 2006 or 2007, I had 15,000 songs. I decided to put artwork on everything. I dragged my computer into the living room, hooked it up to the HDTV, and sat on the couch and went systematically through every single song and labeled it. I really had to dig for artwork to some things, I found songs I didn't know where the fuck they came from or who they were (like a group called 5000 Volts, and their song "I'm On Fire". NO idea where that came from. I've never heard of them.), and did my best to put songs where they belonged. If I had remixes, I searched for the Maxi Single or EP they were from. Sometimes if a bunch of remixes from one song were on various singles (Japan, UK, US), I'd just find the US cover, and label them all from the same single. I also made rules like any maxi single will be labeled "(Maxi Single)", or if it's a one-off single, it'd be "(Single)". If it was specifically an EP, I'd label it like that. If it was a bonus disk like George Michael's "Older:Upper" from his Older CD, then I labeled it as such. I just wanted a continuity to things. I decided to label Revolution era stuff as Prince & The Revolution, but I only used "New Power Generation" on D&P and prince. However, I did not label stuff like The Gold Experience and Chaos and Disorder with the prince moniker.

It took me a couple of months to get through 15,000+ songs. I am over 20K now, so when I get a set of songs, I make sure all that is correct BEFORE I put them in the library.

Also, for multidisk sets like Hall & Oates Do What You Want, Be Who You Are, or MJ's Ultimate Collection, I just changed the "Disk _____ of _____" part, and left the actual album title the same throughout. If I put "Ultimate Disk 1", then iTunes would read that as a different album than "Ultimate Disk 2". I made this decision moreso when I reached The Work series that I had. Instead of labeling each disk as it's own album, I just put "The Work Volume 1" and went from there.

Amateur. No one uses a mouse anymore like that. wink I so RARELY use the mouse. It takes time to move my hand from the keyboard to the mouse, then reposition back on the keyboard. I've learned all the keyboard shortcuts for things over the years. Like Control S for Save. Control I for "Get Info" in iTunes. I've set specific keyboard commands in Paint Shop Pro for tools I use regularly, so I don't have to find the button in some menu.

He he, I think you can edit the info by right clicking on the song. I had a picture of a white acoustic guitar player called Rick James on 'Mary Jane'.

Not necessarily true. If you still sort by Artist, that artist will show up w/ that album name, but the whole album won't IF there are different artists on there. I think Batman registers that way because of the Sheena Easton track. I HATE when I rip an album and it's set as a compilation. It goes into a totally different folder, and I'm a bit picky about my file hierarchy as well. Obvious compilations like Millennium Funk series or Funk Essentials - well, those are a given. I even had a Klymaxx CD come up as a compilation once. I was like WTF?

That only works while the tracks are in iTunes... as soon as they're transfered
to an iPod, they'll get merged if the album title is the same (as iPods don't
recognise 'album artist').
