i can almost understand if you have $25/sq ft imported carpet....but if you got the $.99/sq ft home depot special, why ask? unless of course, they got mud and dog shit on their shoes.

Is that you in your avatar? If so, I'd probably ask you to take off more than just your shoes when you came in.

But to answer your question...I've lived in countries where you have to take your shoes of in everybody's house, so I got kinda used to it.

I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I think you should respect someone's home. But on the other hand, it seems like an imposition.

My friend and his wife had white carpeting thru their whole house- with 3 small children at the time. (I once asked her why someone with little kids would do white.... neutral)
She accosted people as soon as they hit the door. She was so obnoxious about it that it made me not want to go there.

Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

OMG, that's you in your avatar?
Lawd, I'd let you dress any way you wanted for sure nod love

I would, however, require you to parcipate in the party activities like my favorite game--Lion tamer. Essentially, it's very easy to play. Just get
on all fours, do a few tricks, and I throw you my meat.

But personally, as a houseguest, I would check to see if my host has their
shoes off. If so, I would assume I needed mine off too. If I can't figure
out, I ask.

In many cultures an geographical locations it is absolutely natural to remove your shoes before entering one's home. The reasons behind it are numerous, including but not limited to the concept of leaving the outside world behind when you enter one's sancutary, or simply for hygenic reasons.

Shoes are rarely allowed in my home, and as is common here in Europe (and parts of Asia as well), house shoes are always worn. As hostess I always provide house shoes for my guests, as do most of my friends when I or others visit their homes. Additionally, I learned (through experience) that most people here actually bring their own "house socks" to warm and protect their feet when they visit others. The slipper business is actually very big here, and house shoes are so highly used and prized that prices can range anywhere from 1 euro (the IKEA special),to 70 euro (approx.$100) for a good pair of leather slippers.

No shoes in my home.

And for large gatherings here I usually let people know they should bring their own favorite slippers in case I run out...

I feel like I remember someone asking if it was true that americans wear their shoes in the house. This based on tv and movies, I can only assume. lol

In the winter I would ask my guests to remove, but everyone does it without asking. No one's gonna track snow, salt and slush all over someone else's house.
In the summer I let them do whatever they feel comfortable with, though I'd like it if they took them off. It's just cleaner.

Unless it's a party, then leave 'em on.

I always ask people if I should take my shoes off. Unless I can see that they have a really light coloured carpet then i'll take them off anyway.

I just got a light carpet in the entrance hall. If people start taking their shoes off I say 'you don't have to worry - just wipe 'em'. biggrin

I live in Michigan and the carpet throughout my home is a very light silver that seems to get dirty if you look at it too long.

So HELL YEAH, I think it's appropriate to ask a guest to take their shoes off in my house. As a matter of fact, I keep a basket of fresh booties/footies at my front and back doors, just in case their socks are dirty. giggle
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.
