Lemme add a film to your list(from the same year)...

Starring Wendy Hiller & Leslie Howard cool

highfive Gone with the Wind is actually my favorite movie ever. My top 10 movies are all from 1939-1960.

Yeah, I knew about Bette but all of the casting was perfect. I've seen a making of GWTW and the screen tests they did of MANY actresses to cast the role. That movie production was plagued with drama. They say Clark and Vivien couldn't stand each other!

Leslie Howard was on fiyah that year nod But Pygmalion came out in '38

Did you know he was rumored to be a British spy hence why a civilian plane he was on was shot down by the Germans?

It was a crazy period, and nothing is too far fitched, If an ARAB PRINCESS(and actress) was a spy, and got killed instantly during her biggest movie, nothing else will surprise me.

Speaking of Leslie, I wish this movie gets proper remastering....

Another fiery per4mance from Ms.Davis love GOD, this woman could act mute and her eyes alone could carry the whole film. That was one bad bitch.

You and me both, chile! I just LOVE Mammy's line, "I tole im you was prostate wif grief!"

lol I really admire Hattie McDaniel for bringing some measure of dignity to her performance despite the racist stereotyped context of the character. She earned that Oscar for real.

Cynda, if you ever got the chance(although I assume you did) pick up this book by Donald Bogle...

This was originally released in 81-82, but it got expanded for a 2007 release. It was a BIG DEAL back in the early 80s since there was lil' to no studies about black starlets, they made a documentary based on it and interviewed those women(or their relatives/friends - since couple of them were dead at the time).

She could be one ball bustin', castratin' bitch when she wanted to be. I couldn't imagine being married to her when she got pissed and wanted to gut punch a man. I remember an interview with the dude that played her younger husband in All About Eve whom she married IRL after filming. And he talked about how she was. shake

He wasn't exactly a walk in the park neither, he made her pick up her teeth from the floor lol

Bette was violent indeed, she was rumored to be the cause of death of one of her ex-husbans(head injury). Of course, it never got proven.

Yes, the original is great also. I never understood why they were able to use a black actress to play the light skinned girl for the 1934 version but used a white girl 25 years later. confuse confused
