I've lost 50 pounds in the last 8 months. I've done a lot of studying around the subject. Everything I read says you cannot "spot reduce". It's a common misconception that sit-ups will reduce your tummy. Exercise of any kind is good for your muscles but if you don't lose the fat over them no one will see how pretty and toned your muscles are.

So if you have fat/flab you want to get rid of you simply need to lose weight which means it's all about healthy diet and exercise - burning more calories than you consume.

If you're a healthy weight already with just a bit of a pudge and aren't willing to do the work then you have to learn to accept your body for what it is. Nothing wrong with that.

Or there's always surgery.

Unless you tense them up. lol I'm just starting to lose the fat on my gut, though I didn't have a massive amount to begin with. If I tense up my stomach the muscles definitely show though, but if not, they don't.

I hate that, the muscles are there, honestly! They are just covered in fat. This was never a problem before I hit 35.

Re muffin tops, walking, and twisting (like the dance in the 60s) twist your top half but keep your feet and waist fixed.

lol What I've noticed though is that now I'm nearly always tensing up my stomach, without even thinking about it. I'd call it vanity or insecurity otherwise. There's like me really tensing up my stomach, then how I am normally, then how I am if I consciously let it all go. lol

Agree with Mach about swimming. I love it! 1.5kms, 3 times a week. Feels great!

And that twisting I do too. smile

Thank you for mentioning the whole "spot reducing" myth. I'm in no way an example for exercise but when I had a trainer, back in the day, he told me that there's no way to concentrate on problem areas.

There are so many misconceptions about weight loss. It's simple and hard at the same time. A good diet and exercise is the key, not magical pills and savves (?).

I love swimming (former lifeguard). It's great for cardio and resistance. The only downside is that if you are looking for really toned, chisled, muscle definition you won't get it. Swimmers usually have a tiny layer of "fat" that keeps the chisled muscle look from happening.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I tried kickboxing recently that was abs-oriented.

I know you have a medical condition, and kickboxing sounds extreme, but the beginning practice was just some simple twists & punches that anyone could do, and it was like cardio & crunches mixed together.

And it's set to music, you don't have to lie down, and the teacher was hot

This is probably the best for my back.....do you have a pedometer? Can you recommend?

Actually this should be perfect because all the streets up here are at mountain angles!!!
[Edited 11/4/09 0:20am]

It's definately the best option and it will put less stress on ur back and knees too. My pedometer is a G-Spot Sensor it's excellent and depending where U purchase it from it's reasonable at around $25.00.

wtf??? eek

Many people with the mildest form of this type of spina bifida do not even know they have it, as the disease is asymptomatic in most cases
thats what my sister must have...she had xrays a few yrs back...and said she had a vertebrae that wasnt completely closed, drs said it was a mild form of spina bifida. it doesnt affect her every day life (thank goodness)

sorry that it stopped your gymnastic career sad hug

im watching this thread with interest, i have degenetive (torn disc) disease in one disc and 2 bulging discs, as well as psoratic arthritis ( similar symptoms to RA ) makes exercise a hassle some times (who am i kidding, all the time lol)

running up and down stairs with boxes of stock hasnt helped lose weight, just aggrievates the back confused

People with your types of symptoms are normally suggested isometric exercises, right? I remember when I was doing the rehab thing after a gymnastics injury (when they found out about my condition) there were lots of people (myself included) who were working with those rubber things. Tie it do a doorknob and you've got the perfect exercise machine for spines....

Also very interesting but useless fact....this condition is a whopping 5% higher in those of Irish descent. Are potatoes to blame? lol
[Edited 11/4/09 2:06am]

i blame potatoes..im addicted to carbs sigh

im supposed to do bone strengthening(sp?) exercises...and even joined a gym...but when i couldnt even grip the weights (damn hands) i gave up.
boxes up stairs is good for arthritis, not too great for discs

my condition fluctuates...and i know weight DOES affect my back...more weight, more pain sigh
