MP3 compression question

I was wondering if there was a site you
could go to so you could convert 192 bit rate
or higher MP3's into 128 bit rate MP3's.

Bone made me stand up and get into the groove

You can do it in iTunes I think.


Make sure your preferences in iTunes are set to the type of compression you want to make (AAC, MP3, M4p, etc.), then in the iTunes library, highlight the tracks, right-click and select "Make Mp3 versio" (it will say 'make AAC version' if you have the compression type in your preferences set to AAC instead). iTunes will then create copies of the tracks in the manner set by your preferences tab.

128 bit is sort of low end of fidelity though, and you may loose a bit of detail or 'bass' sound, though some people can't tell the difference--I have a hard time telling the difference without high-end earphones.

One thing you can do is set it to AAC or Mp3 VBR (variable bit rate). So the parts of the song that are quieter or not so busy are compressed in a lower bit-rate, while the parts that are louder/more busy are compressed in a higher bit-rate.

It's not a good idea to transcode MP3 files. They'll sound terrible. Why do you want to convert them?

if someone has shit speakers at their computer and little hard disk space it probably doesn't matter lol

I solve this dilemma by simply never listening to music biggrin

there's better ways to rip your cd's to your HD than converting them to mp3

Winamp (a free media player) enables you to rip (and play) them to FLAC files
(Free Lossless Audio Codec) (lossless meaning ; no loss in sound quality)

or you could do it with this http://flac.sourceforge.net/
(download the software)

to play FLAC files in Windows Media Player you need a codec

If compressed at low bitrates i will hear it, but on bitrates from 320 and higher i do not hear any difference. but it's half the size with a flac file.

and frequencies above 20.000 makes not much sense, the human ear can roughly hear 15-20.000 Hz. (with some exceptions offcourse)

yes when the music industry started making CD's they changed the frequency standard to upto 20.000 HZ thinking people wouldn't be able to tell the difference to vinyl

i believe this to be untrue

vinyl definitely sounds better than CD to my ears

Most adults can't hear anything over 18 khz, so what's the use in keeping the higher frequency data?

I used to be overly precious about lossless audio too, but a simple online hearing test changed my mind forever.
