Are you joking?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
Windows 98!!!!! ![]() Firstly, if this is an old computer that you had around the time you put 98 on it, don't upgrade to XP. it won't even run. I am curious though to see if there are any viruses still being written for 98 ![]() It may actually be an uber safe OS now ![]() Then again, there aren't any drivers being written for it either.

F all yall !!!!! ![]() Actually, you can try installing Suse Linux on it. It would probably run smoother and faster than Windows 98, and you'd get a lot more security and stability from it. Also, there's more software for Suse Linux than what's offered for Windows 98 now obviously. Open Office, Skype, several high end browsers, etc. etc. A good option.

can i at least download a version of xp online from somewhere??? Forget about trying to jump from Windows 98 to XP. It's not impossible. Windows 98 is based on FAT 32 file system where as Windows 2000 and Windows XP is based on NTFS file system. Find you a flea market and just buy you a used Dell computer running XP if you don't want to pay the retailers right now for a new one. Fortunately i have a family member that works with computers so i got mine free. All i had to do was purchase an LCD screen. Windows 7 is about to be released later this year which is an option as well. Do avoid Windows Vista. Good Luck. ![]() Don't laugh at my funk

Well at least it's not Windows 3.1. lol
But still.....damn man. Windows 98.....that shit is mad old skool. Since you clearly still have a monitor, keyboard and mouse, why not pick up a cheap tower on eBay? My cousin got a nice dualcore processor system with a couple gig of RAM for less than $150. You could probably find a nice system running XP2 for $100 maybe. |

can i at least download a version of xp online from somewhere??? ![]() ![]() Nah, your computer couldn't handle Windows XP-SP3 even if you sold your soul to the devil. I have an old Win 98 in my garage I use as a backup to put photos/music files/recording on; I now dual boot it, using Puppy Linux. It took me 3 weeks to figure out how to jimmy it to my wireless. My Internet Provider claimed it could'nt be done. ![]() Keep the faith, you only have got a couple of months to go before 20010. ![]()

Please stop recommending Linux to people who are not computer enthusiasts themselves, especially to those who are not used to compiling programs, reading and altering configuration files and willing to spend time to work out all kinds of potential problems. Thanks.
Neither Suse nor Ubuntu would work too well on an older PC either.

Neither Suse nor Ubuntu would work too well on an older PC either. Well now, I didn't learn how to use Linux overnight myself neither. But at least I was committed in doing the research to learn how to use it. And beside, Ubuntu is THE most user-friendly version of Linux ever. So hell yeah, I going to let a lot of people know about it. There is life outside of the Microsoft Plantation. But you have to want it. ![]() EDIT: BTW, I using an old Gateway PC from 2002. It used to included Windows ME (remember THAT software?!?), until I've upgrade to Windows XP. I had a great run with XP until earlier in 2009 when I've gave a free copy of Ubuntu a try on that very old Gateway PC and I've never looked back since.

Letting people "know of something" and telling them that they are "better off" using it are two entirely different things.
Expecting other people to be automatically willing to do the research and going through the learning process that simply installing many unix programs and libraries requires is not the right way to go. The claim that even any modern day linux variant would be a replacement for Windows is just plain nonsense - they are just two entirely different platforms operating on completely different grounds, regardless of how Windows or Mac -like the WMs may look to the average users' eyes upon the first inspection. Sure, you can spend several months learning the environment, but it's an entirely different thing whether it would actually benefit the original poster. Is that how most people would like to spend their free time after their working hours? Not really, yet that's what it always leads up to. Acting as a spokesperson for any type of an alternative OS is pretty unnecessary anyway. Carry on.

Should I replace Vista with XP because XP doesn´t suck up as much resources as Vista? People seem to loathe Vista. I´m an computer idiot so I don´t really know. And in the same token, preventing a person's. free of speech to be use to tell another person good advice (even if it's Linux related) is both unnecessary AND plain wrong (IMO).

can i at least download a version of xp online from somewhere??? Windows 98 is infamous about worse handling the memory. not much can be done about the freezing. I'm sure you can download XP free of charge on the internet, but that would be illegal.
