Moving all your shit from one computer to another

Alrighty, then.

So my new laptop's on its way. It's Vista and'll be upgraded to Windows 7 as soon as that's available. So...my new question is:

What's the best way to move my shit from this (XP) laptop to that laptop? I have a 250 GB backup hard drive. Excuse my ignorance: Can I just transfer everything via that? confuse It couldn't be that easy. Could it? boxed

I just had to reinstall the operating system on my laptop (which, btw didn't go so well, so I'ma hafta do it again mad ), so I had to make sure all my files were backed up. I'm thinking for basic files/programs (Word, excel, music files) you should just be able to save to your external hd, then copy to your new computer. Special programs may have to be installed again on the new laptop; you'll have to have the installation disk or download from the internet (ie. If you have a printer you'll probably have to reinstall that software, you might have to download adobe acrobat reader from the internet).

Disclaimer: I am not an IT person so I could be completely wrong.

Disclaimer 2: I do not have an iPod or use iTunes, so I don't know how to transfer iTunes files safely.

Good luck. smile

I used to have this cord that my brother got me from Best Buy that would connect two computers together so that you could just directly transfer stuff from one comp to another

Can't recall what it was called though, but it was pretty useful for me...until I lent it to a friend and never got it back mad
If you will, so will I

Sounds like you're talking about a "Windows Easy Transfer" doohickey. What I'm wonderin' is Do I need somethin' like dat? Or will my backup hard drive suffice?

Oh! I don't see why it wouldn't. I have a portable harddrive that works fine for transferring data smile

Free software for cloning Windows OS HDs to an external HD: http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/

Free software for cloning Mac OS HDs to an external HD: http://www.bombich.com/so...e/ccc.html

These copy everything (even desktop items) to any kind of drive - which in turn, can be used as your boot drive. Wouldn't be without them.

And if you have an old 2.5" or 3.5" IDE or SATA drive sitting around, you can use one of these to do the transferring without a case: http://store.worldstart.c...uctid=5243 (great for testing drives as well)
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

FIRST OF ALL.. you have NO RIGHT to tell me what type of world i am in or put a label on me..just because i honestly DO love all of the world and i did enjoy seeing it because of the message, and the music..OMG you went to my profile....your point is what??? just cause i pointed out not even a scratch to some of my favorites that my world has made, makes me a "fair weather fan" and who gives you authority to label anyone?? do you know how ridiculous you sound?? i AM NOT and will not divulge in any WORLD BASHING on a site that is "sopposed to be for FANS of THE WORLD!!! soo that makes me crazy or a "fam" or obsessed..i can go on and on about my love and respect for the world who has brought soo much in my life...INSPIRATION< LOVE you still dont impress me..when i first came on the org, sooo long ago, i thought i would find others who understood the message of loving one another, without labels, or a whole lot of spiritual inspiration...i thought that others that really enjoiied the world was really in tune with the concept of a "universal love" ..i can ONLY count a handful of those who do...the rest are a bunch of sad, sad, miserable people...soo if Prince ever shut this site down...i wouldnt be mad at all!!!
