Canadian National Anthem sung in Cree!

Beautiful. It literally brought a tear to my eye to hear the anthem sung in one of this nation's original languages. Nevermind English and French, Native languages should be recognized officially.

We are stardust. We are golden.

that's awesome! I missed it when it happened so thanks for sharing

one of the suggested videos is also about Akina... and talking about the death of native languages in canada. only 25% are able to speak their lanugage... and you can bet that most of that is in the elder population! in another generation, it will be gone.

Same but different for my heritage. In one generation (between my grandparents and parents) we went from being fluent to not being able to speak neither german nor norwegian. The difference of course being that it's not the death of the language. Just the death of it in my family.

I only know two words in Cree, the word for peace and my father's real name. He himself only knew a few phrases, but his father spoke Cree as a first language. We really need to work on motivating the appropriate leaders toward pushing for language education before the tongues die. I know of families where the young people can't communicate at all with their elders. neutral

"Ka Kanatahk" is "Oh, Canada" spoken in Cree.

She has a much more mature sound than most 13 year olds, even those who are talented vocalists, do.

Can't listen to it right now 'cuz my office PC has no speakers.

But definitely cool.

Is "Canada" derived from a Cree word?

Not Cree, but it does come from a Native word. Iroquois or Huron, I believe. It means "the village".

Yeah that's cool.

In contrast, my parents' homeland of Honduras literally means "depths" in Spanish.
Why? Becasue of the deep waters off the northern coast & when Columbus landed in Honduras on his 2nd (3rd?) trip to the Americas, he was grateful to have landed on terra firma and allegedly stated; "Thank God that we are out of these Depths."
confused
