I never purchased an air conditioner before

sun So it is 27 degrees outside today, and almost 25 degrees in my apartment. Someone mentioned earlier this week they were buying an air conditioner and I had forgotten the feeling of WHY one would need an air conditioner until TODAY! whew

Air conditioner... the one appliance I haven't ever had handed down to me... seems to me that people run these things until the day they stop cooling. rainbow

Are there free-standing ones? I don't see why they have to be wedged into one's window. shrug

nah, not really. i mean, you can measure it and it probably wouldn't hurt, but most A/C units are pretty easy to adjust to any window.

my only advice would be to go to the hardware store and tell 'em you're installing an air conditioner and ask what kind of supplies they have for sealing off your window. i think that's the important part.

I can't see myself sealing off a window. I don't think any conditioner will be tall enough for my vertical window

lol you need a casement window to put it in... not the swing open kind most apartments have. do you have one o' dem?

what floor are you on? if there is a screen on the outside and you live on the third floor you won't be able to do it without building super help.

go to the sears outlet store. you might get lucky on a portable air conditioner. but it still has to be vented to the outside. (and also the condensation has to be caught in a drip bucket. window ones are more convenient that way. it just drips on the ground.)

as far as sealing up the window you just need that wide (like two inch wide) squishy foam. when the window is pushed up it leaves a gap between the glass and the frame of the top half of the window. if you don't jam foam in every gap you will get bees and dirt and heat back in your apartment.

does anyone else have a window air conditioner in? just do whatever they did.

otherwise a portable would work for you. they (should) come with an expandable insert you put in the window and attach the vent to.

portable's aren't terribly expensive, you just have to vent them out the window like emm said.

Here in the FL, we have two giant units powering central air conditioning throughout the house.

Here's a portable one for about the price of an IPod touch: http://www.amazon.com/Hai...58&sr=8-19

I've seen portables go up to 600 bucks, so this one is pretty cheap.

You can buy wall units for like 100 bucks, but you'll have to factor in
the installation cost for the window (which I have no clue about because
in Florida all houses are built with central air. To not do so would violate
Geneva conventions and at least 2 of the 10 commandments.)

27 degrees would be extremely cool to me. confuse Now here in California it was 97 degrees, and I was burning up.

I looked again, my window is definitely wide enough to fit a normal air conditioner, I'm still concerned about the space above it though..

Besides squishy foam, what do people fit in the foot-tall section with no air conditioner sitting in it?

Celsius

When somebody complains 27 degrees is hot, I think it's safe
to assume they're not talking Fahrenheit

27 degrees celsius is a good 80, 81 degrees farhenheit. just the beginning of summer

that's actually a great recommendation.

i think my parents have central air now, and it's always nicely chilly and dry as heck in their house.

It's 81 during the daytime or night?

During the daytime, I can't imagine 81 degrees requiring A/C lol
I sit on the front porch, read, and eat in that kind of weather. lol

on a window air conditioner (at least those that i am familiar with) there is an "L" shaped lip at the top. when you put the top sash windown down the lip pushes against the window and keeps the air conditioner from falling out the window. (they are heavy mf'ers). without a sash that comes down on it i don't know how you would install that type in a window that slides to the side. shrug it might be able to be done if you have someone that knows what they are doing with a drill and some plywood but otherwise i would go with the portable.
