In my case, I have a godfather (my mom's old fiend) and a godmother (my dad's co-worker's wife), who were named for me when I was babtised.

Here, they can be pretty much anyone, but not your mother and father ofcourse. They're task is to take care of the religious upbringing.. (didn't happen, ) I've also heard that their job is to take care of the child, if something happens to their own parents, but I'm not entirely sure if that's true...

Anyway, the meaning depends a lot on the godparents own activity.. In my case, they sent me presents on b-days and x-mas and I spent a week at my godfather in hungary when I was 13. But I don't keep in touch with em at all nowdays and they don't keep in touch with me.

On the otherhand, in my ex's family the godparents are usually also the child's aunt or uncle, so they're really close from the beginning and they have a bond with the kids..
