The Cable Guy - Jim Carrey

I just got through watching it again and I have to say that Carrey should have gotten one of those "comedic-exception," rare-ass Oscar nods for best actor.

I mean, that cat REALLY worked the shit outta that role lol. The lisp, the psychotic behavior, the creepy-ass laugh, his movements. The mere physicality of his performance is what makes it for me. The jail phone scene was fuckin' hilarious!).

When I saw the flick when it dropped back in 96, I didn't think much about it, but seeing it on cable made me realize that muthafucka Carrey was at his wildest in that flick. That was around the time of his career where he was at his best.

It's a trip that he's fallen off as much as he has. Probably has a lot do with others coming in and stealing his fire, like Ferrell, Steve Carrel, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Vince Vaughn.

I never really understood why it was so canned when it came out.

It's dark and hilarious.

I think part of the problem was the hype about Jim Carey's reportedly huge salery for the movie. Something like that?

I think Ben Stiller wrote the script?

Havn't seen it in years, but most of the 90's Carey flicks are cool.

I agree. I mean, it wasn't the best flick but it was hella funny and dark at the same time.

You need to peep it, especially for the scene where Carrey goes to beat up Broderick's ex's date. Carrey's WHOLE outfit and vibe for that scene was hilarious. lol

Ben Stiller directed this flic, it's probably the darkest movie that Carrey has been in. At some point I felt sorry for his character, his loneliness.....interesting film! nod

you're totally right, Mutha.

that movie is friggin' genius ( i mean ya know for the kind of comedy that it is) and hilarious. Carrey at his best, just as you describe it. Stiller at his best.

Always loved it and never understood why it was panned.

Thesexofit said it could have been the salary Carrey commanded at the time, but I don't see how people could use that against the movie itself. It was funny as hell.

Another thing to remember is that Ben Stiller wasn't "proven" at that time - he'd done the Ben Stiller show BUT in terms of directing films he'd only done Reality Bites, so mass audiences probably had no idea what to expect outta that guy but thought they knew what they'd get from Carrey - a straight up, slapstick comedy. I'm sure the dark side of it threw a lot of people.

I like it a lot more now (even just for that damn karaoke scene), but I remember feeling ambivalent about it when I saw it in the theater.

Oh, & Broderick is a good straight man...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart
