Spike Lee's School Daze Was just talking to a friend about about Spike Lee. One of my early favorites was Schooldaze. Did you like the movie? Why or why not? Was college like this for you?

Loved this movie and I wish college had been that interesting... A working class Hero is something to be ~ Lennon |

i was annoyed lol .. cause i didnt like the division in the film (only cause we 'live' this everyday, why put it on film?) .. i just thought with Spike's influence in the movie industry, he'd put more of a solution in the movie to the problem... but yeah, i'd put this movie on rotation and watch it..

Loved the movie and it made me want to go to an HBCU, for a hot minute. My college experience was very similar to the movie, in positive and negative ways. Even the interactions between the college kids and the townies. [Edited 8/29/08 18:33pm]

I wasn't in college yet when the movie broke. I ended up not going to a HBC, but part of me will always feel like I missed something special. All of my boys who went to Howard had me wanting to pack my bags and move--especially those who pledged. I was in junior high when it came out. By the time I went to school a lot of my friends went to Howard, Grambling, and Spellman. I'd go visit them and came away glad I didn't go to an HBCU. I still had a great experience at my university. We had lots of black organizations on campus so there were the Greeks, the non-Greeks, the righteous, enlightened Afro-centric crew, etc. etc. It was a great experience all-around.

LOVED IT. I was finishing my freshman year in high school when that movie came out. I wanted soooo badly to go to an HBCU but we couldn't afford it. So I had to go the affirmative action route. But oh well. That is one of my favorite Spike Lee films.

Love this flick. My school had a very small Black population, but our presence on the campus was very much like the movie.

This movie came out when I was in college and I liked it a lot at the time. My university however was only 3% black with obviously no black fraternities so while I couldn't relate to it much, I did find the whole pledging story fascinating.

Jasmine Guy? Isn't she as old as Eartha Kitt? Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Love it b/c it actually showed people who looked like me that were getting their education. As I got older I also began loving it for the fact that it showed the positive and negative side of a Black college

Dug it.
It captured the HBCU experience, for sure. Probably had a slight, encouraging effect on my attending one. Anyone remember the Spike Lee stores from back in the day?

I liked it. I didn't get the ending the first time around, mainly because I was young, but now I understand it and it's no longer a "dumb-ass ending" anymore . nWo: bboy87 - Timmy84 - LittleBlueCorvette - MuthaFunka - phunkdaddy - Christopher

oh, yeah, I've got the exclusive on this one.
I was attending the Univ. of Houston. 1986 ( or so). OK, so, They sent sneak preview tickets to U of H and Texas Southern U. When we went up to our University Center to see the movie, we realized that Texas southern had been invited to our campus. ...WHAT ENSUED WAS PANDOMONIUM!!!! I think the promoters expected us to riot, but it was peaceable. ha ha ha!!

I saw it when I was in college. I thought it was exaggerated, but fun.
I went to a big State University where the Black community within the university was somewhat like that. I remember going to a "beach party" and doing "Da Butt" I own the DVD and still watch it sometimes. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

This is my favorite scene. Them girls were foine. . . back in the day.
I don't even see step shows advertised anymore. I remember that they'd have a step show at UT every spring and a HUGE block party the night before. Step teams would come from all over the country to compete. If you didn't know there were black folks at UT, you did after that weekend. I don't think they do the step show any more. I'm soooo glad I grew up when I did.

I love the fact that it didn't shit,,,,,it tackled the "divide and conquer" bullshit that ALOT of so-called black universities were denying @ the time but catering to,,,and STILL do, some of them.

Some of my friends were upset that Spike "put our business in the street" with this movie. I applauded him for it, and he didn't sugarcoat it either.
I didn't go to an HBC, but black greeks were big on my campus(Adelphi U.) back in the early 80s - Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Malik Sigma Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Delta Phi. I don't know what happened, but it's no longer the case.

Exactly. However, that musical scene about hair was sad. Other than that, great film.
