CANADA WARNS ITS CITIZENS ABOUT TRAVELING IN THE UNITED STATES

ADVISORY COMES AFTER U.S. OFFICIALS SECRETLY DETAIN A CANADIAN CITIZEN AND DEPORTS HIM TO SYRIA, WHERE HE HASN’T LIVED IN 14 YEARS

Last week the Canadian government issued an unusual warning for many of its citizens: beware of traveling in the United States.

The travel advisory was directed toward Canadian citizens born in Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan or Yemen.

The advisory came after the U.S. secretly detained a man who is both a Canadian and Syrian citizen in New York.

On September 26, the man, Maher Arar was in JFK airport on a stopover flight from Tunisia to Montreal. Arar was detained and interrogated for nine hours without a lawyer. Officials claimed Arar had ties to a terrorist organization. Arar was then detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

No one heard from him until Oct. 3 when Arar made a desperate and emotional phone call to his mother-in-law telling her that he had been jailed and needed help. None of his relatives have heard from him since.

Around October 10, US officials deported him. He was sent first to Jordan and then to Syria where he has not lived in 14 years. He is now being held in a Syrian prison. His family was never informed. Canadian officials were not informed but have met with Arar in Syria. His family have been denied contact.

While the Canadian government has backed away from its travel advisory, the family of Maher Arar are still fighting for his release and to learn what has happened.

Meanwhile the Justice Department announced Wednesday that thousands of men from five countries identified as high risk for terrorism and who arrived in the United States on or before Sept. 10 must be fingerprinted and photographed.

The rules are part of the National Security Entry/Exit Registration System implemented by Attorney General Ashcroft and the Justice department. Men over 16 years of age from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Sudan will be specifically targeted.

Come on. A few tourists were attacked. 99,99 % of "snowbirds" enjoyed themselves. That was just more media hysteria -- crime sells papers, so they always have to heighten the drama with alarmist headlines.

These new screenings are entirely more dangerous. That's because once someone is even suspected of terrorism, they disappear into a parallel, secret system of justice, can be deported on mere suspicions... and returned to their country of origin, where they can be incarcerated in horrible conditions.

Hopefully, they won't be sent this way :

I can see why they have issued that warning. Seems like since 9/11 Americans have started a witch hunt on all arab looking people. Some in the mob dont even make a difference if somebody is from Israel or Palestine.
Even more scary is the government. Still about 1500 people are believed to be in custody (Source: Amnesty International report 9/2002), they simply have vanished. Most people are in no relation to any terrorist organizations, even the one being kept in Guantanamo bay (Cuba) against any international laws.

Strange: The Bin Laden family (Osama's brother and a few nephews), who were living in Washington D.C. until 9/11 and who were running a charity organization for arab children in the US which the FBI believes is a money laundry machine of Al Quaida, this very family was allowed to leave the country one week after 9/11. They have never been questioned by authorities, never been put on trial. Why? The answer is simple: They'd put so much dirty laundry on the table about their business ties with the Bush clan that W would not have survived three more days in his office. They would have impeached him

Hmmm... wasn't Bin Laden repudiated by his family way before 9/11? I mean, the guy had been a famous terrorist for years. If his own family was allowed to prosper in the US, I'm pretty sure it's because the authorities were sure there was absolutely no ties with Bin Laden other than blood.

I think your interpretation is very biased, frankly.

hmm yeah biased okay but yours isn't?

I mean my friend had a very hard time to get into the us (colonic irrigation and a complete body ct scan smile ) because his father was born in Indonesia so a very very faint hint of a link to what looks like he might have once been in the same country as a terrrorist. Whereas saying that you don't like your brother means you can leave easily? Sure there must have been more to it!

Actually from what I have read the F.B.I. still linked some connections... however, C.I.A. believed else, again the rivalry between those two...

What about my interpretation is biased?

applekisses

I live in Detroit and my brother won't go over to Canada anymore because even before 9/11 he was targeted for looking "middle-eastern" (our mom is Italian and our dad is Hungarian.) But, I won't let it stop me from going to visit my friends in Ontario. smile And, they've never had a problem coming over here.
