Everyone likes to get trim for their wedding day, but for this man the exercise is a rather bigger deal.

Weightlifting involves trying to raise a 50-stone weight - himself.

But without the exercise Manuel Uribe - once the world's fattest man at more than half a ton - won't even be able to get out of bed to get married.

Mr Uribe has lost fully 37 stone in two years of dieting on grapefruits, egg-white omelettes, fish, chicken and vegetables, but he's still too heavy to stand.

As he was carried outside to mark his 43rd birthday today, he said his one dream was to be able to stand for his upcoming wedding to girlfriend Claudia Solis, 38.

'It's so frustrating. My greatest wish is to stand when we wed,' he said.


It's only the third time he's left his home in Monterrey, northern Mexico, in the past six years.



Uribe is still unable to move his swollen legs and his dream is to walk again and visit the mountainous countryside around Monterrey.

But it's not all self-denial.

Presents of suckling pig and lamb arrived as Mr Uribe sat outside on his bed in a bedsheet, had a beer and waited for a cake.

'I'm happy that it is my birthday,' he said.

Mr Uribe spent the 1990s eating pizzas and burgers in the United States where he worked as a computer repairman.

His bulk won him a place in the 2008 edition of the Guinness World Records.

I've always been curious cuase I've read alot of stories about folks who used to have relatively normal lives, and the baloon up like this. I'm fascinated to know how the sustained themselves once they became bedridden, and what the process was that got them there. I mean, being confined to your bed is a major major major lifestyle change, let alone just getting fatter. It fascinates me how this happens.

Another question I have is how does his lungs support him? And his other vital organs. It seems like it would be impossible to sustain for very long.

I guess she does. He's not her 1st big man. The tumors on his legs prohibit he's being able to stand. The excess weight don't help either. Folks should bring him free weights or music to move to instead of food, to celebrate his birthday.

I'm telling you....after my bout of deppression last year, I can see how it happens.

I just would come home from work and sit in front of that TV and kill the refrigerator. Some people use drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, and some folks use food.

I don't think I would ever be able to LET myself be that ginormous, but I can see how it starts. Shit, I quit that fucking job and moved in with my boyfriend and the rest is 20 pounds and counting history.

I feel really sorry for huge people like that...that is a lot of "stuffed" in sadness.
