Can Anybody Recommend A Good, Free Photoshop Software Package

Major emphasis on the word "free", since I don't want to have to pay for it. I just want a photoshop program that I can play around with and get accustomed to using. Any suggestions??
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

The Most complete of the Photoshop like programs which would be free is

The GIMP

Like Photoshop it has a high learning curve and its user inter-phase takes some getting used to.

Other freebies which have photoship like qualities, not as powerful yet more features than most would ever use include

Artweaver
Paint.Net
Photofiltre
Project Dogwaffle

If you want to make a minor investment in a program more capable than any of those listed (accept maybe The Gimp) but in a class close to Photshop...look up Paint Shop Pro. New version is under $100 u.s. and older versions can be gotten for much less.

As I said in my originating post, I was looking for a freebie, since money is tight right now. But once my financial situation improves, I will definitely consider it.
