Art institute cancels exhibit that shows animals being bludgeoned

The controversial exhibition was canceled because "we've gotten dozens of threatening phone calls that targeted specific staff people with death threats, threats of violence and threats of sexual assaults," says San Francisco Art Institute's president.

It's not gross! It's beautiful!!! confused

I'm all about art, but some people truly have nothing to say and have to resort to shock.

I don't quite get that exhibit of the dead humans either. It's interesting, I suppose, but I definitely don't want to see it and wouldn't take my kids, as the commercial suggests I do.

While I can sort of understand what the artist was getting at, it doesn't need to be depicted. Sometimes what is called art isn't. Just because you defecate on the sidewalk and call it art doesn't mean that it is.

as an artist, that is something i cannot and will not agree with, on any basis.
it's wrong, and it's that kind of bullshit that gives us a kife reputation.

lol my prof had brought him up to me one day as a "reference" of sorts hmm
i don't remember his name, but all his work was based on shock
he had a series of photographs of dead prostitutes too - like closeups of their hands and feet... wasn't feeling it at all.

"Piss Christ?" lol at least it's just stupid & gross, nobody's getting hurt.

There are artists who hurt themselves, too duh. It's less offensive than animals being hurt, but no less stupid & artistically void.

But violent cruelty aside, who's to say something is not art?

I mean, seriously, and I'm being absolutely sincere here, my threads are art to me. I'm like a painter.

If that were really the case every time I punch someone in the face I would be able to use the 'Art Defence".

yeah I have no real problem with Piss Christ. Maybe it's stupid, but it's art and it doesn't hurt anyone (physically).

Sorry Dan, I am one of the folks who will say..That's Not Art! There might be artistry involved, but it doesn't make it art. Something can be beautiful, but it doesn't make it art.

As I've said before Taking Crap on a Sidewalk is not art it's Crap! (And YES I know someone who did this)

I agree with you on this. Art is anything you do, say or create with the intention of expressing yourself and/or creating a reaction in other people.
This artist has obviously created a reaction in other people. So his "work" is successful as an art piece. It's up to the viewer to decide if it's good or bad art. But it is still art.

That's just my twocents
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

So if I poop on a canvas and put that shit, pun intended, on exhibition, it's ART?!?

Pff...
I was recently at a modern art museum and all I can say is... whoa, people consider all kinds of crap art nowadays. You can have a white sheet of paper with one black spot on it, come up with some artsy-fartsy name and voilá, you have a painting. What theee fuck?!?

... disbelief
