My roommate has an on-line business (The link is in my sig). It got off 2 a slow start, but she's done pretty well with it. Not enough that it's her only job, but enough that it's breaking even.

r U thinking of doing 1?

Yes, well more like coasting along, but it's been a very bumpy ride, mainly with legal issues.

Advertising and maintining visibility in the search engines is also very costly and unpredictable.

If you find a niche item or service that you can offer online without much hassle, it is possible to make decent money. A buddy of mine invested in some kind of special printer for making ID cards and such. He takes orders from various businesses who want these cards for their employees. He makes like an extra 25,000 to 30,000 a year doing this in the evenings. He also works a full time job in the daytime. It's definitely not just pocket change.

I've also seen people try to sell diet supplements online and lose several thousand dollars before they ultimately bailed out of it.

often. i bought seasons 1-4 of six feet under the other day on craigslist for 100, and burned em and sold em for a profit of 50

and those folders hold TONS of dvds. saves a lot of space, especially since space is so precious in nyc.

Do you think it's wise talking about illegal activities in an open forum?

Yes. I have a bunch of my designs on CafePress right now (sig biggrin ) and my goal is to eventually have my own site and do all my own screenprinting. nod And THEN to open a real shop in the real world and sell my designs on just about everything there. Not just t-shirts and stuff though, but also handmade t-shirts and lots of hand-sewn things as well. pray

http://www.cafepress.com/spacequake

I have a ton more designs to come, and I'll be opening a second CafePress shop within the next 3 months. It's pretty new, but it's doing fairly well so far. nod I'm also working on getting the rights to do designs for band t-shirts and merchandise.

I've always done graphics and illustrations, but it had to be put on the side for many years because of my dance career. But now that I am unable to dance (a bad injury) it really gave me the time to think about what else I could do with my life. Art and design were always a passion of mine as well, and it seemed like the perfect time to switch careers.

I know that was long-winded, but a guess if I don't self-promote, I'll never get anywhere. redface And this is the perfect thread to do so. biggrin I didn't start my own thread about it yet because I am so shy when it comes to selling my stuff. Which is bad, I know. sigh

I can't check it now at work, but what kind of designs are you doing/interested in? Your own creations and art? biggrin And I don't know if you know this or not, but how expensive would it be to sell band clothing? Is it different with each band/artist, or is there any way to do it legally with little hassle?

Well, I do all my own designs, and for band stuff I kind of have my own "signature" style of design that I tend to do. A colorful, vintage look. TOTALLY different from the character designs I have on my site.

And yeah band stuff tends to be illegal to sell to the masses unless you get the rights to the photos and/or band name. Take DJTees for example who are doing ridiculously well. (bastards! hrmph ) lol I've contacted them and they have different contracts with about 4 different well-known rock photographers and they use only their photos as a basis for their simple, one-color design. But they put a shitload of money into getting tat business up and running, and they are raking in the bucks now!

Oh, and I do illustrations too (just for my own pleaseure though, because I doubt anyone would like them) lol . There's a recent one in my profile actually.
