Are The Movies Out Now Really THAT Bad??...

Was going to go to a movie this afternoon...kinda sorta have the day off before a blizzard of work comes my way starting next week (which is a good thing woot! )...but there's absolutely nothing playing nearby that catches my eye... confused

So I went to rottentomatoes.com...look at this list of the top 10 highest rated movies:

Wordplay 94%
An Inconvenient Truth 91%
United 93 90%
Inside Man 89%
Water 89%
Deep Sea 3-D 89%
Thank You For Smoking 87%
Wild Safari 3D: A South African Adventure 86%
Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D 86%
The Proposition 85%

Half of these movies are documentaries...and United 93 plays like one. While I do love documentaries, I was in the mood for a good ol' fashion studio movie, you know? None of the studio movies listed above are playing nearby.

Now look at this list of movies with a rating of 60% or below (which gets them a "rotten" rating):

Ice Age: The Meltdown
X-Men: The Last Stand
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Nacho Libre
Keeping Up With The Steins
The Lake House
Art School Confidential
The Sentinel
The Break-Up
Poseidon
The Omen
Failure to Launch
R.V.
The Da Vinci Code
Garfield's A Tale of Two Kitties

And that's not the entire list of clunkers, only the more well-known ones.

So, basically according to rottentomatoes, that leaves me with a choice of the following studio movies, all rated somewhere between 83% - 70%:

Akeelah and the Bee
A Prairie Home Companion
Cars
Over the Hedge
Mission: Impossible III

Cars and Over the Hedge I would easily wait for DVD lol...the other three aren't playing anywhere nearby, and I don't feel like going into L.A. just to see a movie.

Are the movies being put out now really that bad?... neutral

Man, I love movies. And, I can't remember a year when I've been nearly as underwhelmed by the releases.

You can't go wrong with Akeelah, despite its formulaic plot. It still entertains. As did M:I 3.

When does M. Night Shymalan's "Lady in the Water" come out?

I like reading people's comments on sites like Rottentomatoes or Amazon, but I usually take the reviews with a grain of salt.

Think of the crappiest album you've ever heard, and go to Amazon and look it up, and I will bet you $100, some ding dong wrote a 4 or 5 star review of it, rambling on how it's the best album ever.

and, even more frequently, vice versa.

"hendrix is totally overrated. his songwriting sucked and my brother can play 'third stone' with one hand, lolololol"

I heard the Omen is good.

I saw Cars and that was good. I saw Posseiden and I liked it a lot...not as good as the first but I liked it.

Not sure about the others really. I like Rotten tomatoes as they combine practically every review together, so you get a smattering of styles. Normally you get a consensus on a few things.

I am SO not looking forward to that. He, IMHO is very over rated. His movies are shot and acted well, but I always feel jipped after seeing his movies. NONE of them are great...but strangly fall just short of it. It's the endings...I am convinced of it.

I'd stay away from X-Men...I heard it was terrible.

I wanted to see Superman, but the last commercial had some heavy metal song playing in the background. Totally turned me off. I mean if they are trying to lure folks like me who have FOND memories of the original with Chris Reeves, they need to keep it more simple and majestic.

My money is on Strangers with Candy...looks HILARIOUS...(like cancer). Oh and of course Snakes on a Plane!

Wait till the Richard Kuklinski movie is made. Hopefully the right people will make it.

They must include the guy being tied to a tree , have his "fruit hand picked", add salt to his wounds, and then fed to the sharks.

I usually support indie movies and they are wayy better than some of the movies that I seen in theatres over the last couple years.

Fast and the furious is like watching a already hyper 5 year old on crack, loud and gets annoying quickly. Besides I've been in Japan for years, I still haven't seen ANY drifting...
