Happy Bloomsday!

Today is Bloomsday! A day celebrated by all fans of the works of James Joyce's Ulysses. It is the day on which the fictional events of Ulysses take place.

Scholars usually get together and do pub crawls and marathon readings and things as well as dress up like the characters in the book I guess.

Academics are really just a bunch of fams. smile

This year scholars are doing something different.

They are celebrating by suing the estate of James Joyce for the right to quote from Joyce's works! woot!

The Joyce estate, run singlehandely (and some say dictatorially) by Joyce's grandson Stephen James Joyce (he insists on the "James"), is notoriously unfriendly to scholars and others who want to make use of Joyce's works. (I believe that Kate Bush had a run in with the estate when she wanted to base a song of hers on Molly Bloom's soliloquy at the end of the book.)

So far, none of SJJ's claims have been tested in court, scholars and publishers have all just quietly acquiesced to the estate's demands. So we'll see how this pans out.

Happy Bloomsday to all, and to all a good day!

There was a very good piece in the June 19th issue of The New Yorker about all this...

woot!

When I was out at lunchtime I saw a crowd of Bloomers (bloomers ? bloomsday celebrants, whatever they call themselves) and one of them was reading from Ulysses. Does this mean they were breaking the law ?

Naughty people. biggrin

Happy Bloomsday one and all!
Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect, it means you've decided to look beyond the imperfections... unknown
