School Closings...

There's about 4-7 inches on the ground with another 6-9 expected. MANY area schools are closed becuase of the snow that is still coming down.

Are they "wimps" for not just plowing through now/later?

I say better safe than sorry...1 bus accident could harm 30-40 kids in 1 shot.

chicago won't close down anything ever, doesn't matter if there's a snowstorm, nuclear war, what-have-you.

Chicago as a city must be quite used to that sort of thing though surely! I mean, they must take the extremes of weather into account in terms of transport, construction etc...

Im in Scotland, and we used to get off school all the time but I think the most common reason was because the heating pipes and bioler had froze up. I dont think any school in Scotland has been fitted with new systems since....well, since they were built! But were made of strong stuff, we can handle it nod

You know, growing up I had (on average) 1 snow day every other year, but it seems like they are much more common nowadays in Minnesota. Maybe it just seems that way cos my work doesn't close as often as schools do, but whatevs...

I didn't watch the news this AM so I'm unsure if any metro area schools closed. Is it more common for the Greater MN schools to close perhaps? As those areas may have less resources for keeping the roads passable?

Regardless, it's definately a winter wonderland in MPLS today nod

I cant really comment on MN, but here it always snows less in the built up city areas; Im from out in the country originally and it snowed all the time, but I live in the city centre now and were lucky if we get an inch a year! I think it has something to do with the heat thats generated from a big city, I dont know whay, but snows less likely there. also may have less to do with resources for the roads and more to do with less cars passing than in the city.

Here in TX we shut down for sleet, everyone goes nuts
Last week we had some icy weather and there were so many accidents.
People from Chicago laugh at us.

we get no snow...no inches of anything
Just icy rain. Everyone freaks out,ram each other on the highway and just go bonkers

School districts are a bunch of fucking pussies. Let the kids tread through the fucking snow. It won't kill 'em. Put some hair on their cojones.

But see, it's normally like that in Minnesota too. Here in the Twin Cities, nothings closed. Of course, we have more resources than you have where you are, Eskomo ( giggle @ the name now).

And I must say, its GORGEOUS out there. Quiet. I love the damper on noise the snow gives. It's a heavy, wet snow too. Like thick cake frosting.

Usually if there is six inches on the ground here and it's still snowing the public schools will close. Catholic schools close at the slightest chance for anything.

lol I remember when I was living in Fayetteville, we got a big snowstorm one year. This would have been about 1987/88. There were (I'm guessing) maybe 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground, and we were out of school for a week! They're just not prepared for the snow in NC.

i remember growing up in indiana, we'd have snow days all the time. of course, i lived out in the sticks and it would take forever to plow all the roads when we got a really bad snow. i remember the blizzard of '78...that was like a little mini vacation!

I wish I could remember the year but it must've been 78-79. We got a HUGE storm in MN. I lived across the street from an elementary schooll. The drifts were literally up to the roof of the school. Of course it was a snow day. So me and a friend spent the day sledding off the roof of the school. Good times!

That hit hard up here too, and yeah it was around 78-80 maybe (I'm thinking I was in kindergarten?) and the drifts were up to the garage roof biggrin

That's because Chicago has enough built in days off. They don't have school for the smallest of holidays - Pulaski, Columbus, Groundhog Day, Grandparents Day.

The rural schools are open (Including Cloquet & ESKO) but the "big city" schools in Duluth are closed. I wonder if it's because they have so much more area to cover and so many more schools to worry about.

It is absolutely beautiful though biggrin Up here it's the heavy type of snow, but still coming down all snow globie biggrin biggrin

We used to get quite a lot of days off due to bad weather. I remember one time there was a ridiculous excuse of that the pipes were too cold for the school meals. We couldnt possibly kept the school open that day.

You know you're from Northern Minnesota when....it gets so closed the schools actually have pipes burst nod (I think they use water based heating?)
