Turkey and chicken bones;
Do they really hurt my big guy?

Turkey and Your Furry Friends Don't Mix

"DO NOT feed your dog turkey skin," says Lyndee Henderson, Suite101 editor of Small Dog Breeds."It can kill them because they can't digest it. Also, never feed your dog a turkey leg -- they can choke on the small bones, and larger turkey bones fracture easily. If ingested, bone fragments can puncture the dogs internal organs."

If you insist on feeding your dog part of the leftover turkey, Lyndee adds: "If one way to get rid of turkey is to feed it to your furry friend, make certain you inspect the pieces you give your dog for skin and bones. Turkey is a great treat for dogs only if served with care."

sad hug Poor dog, I hope he gets better soon. I hate it when one of my cats gets sick. As you said, your pets are like your children. smile
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

So you two are saying you'd rather feed the dog even though you know it makes it worse? confuse It's the same thing as when you have a stomach flu or a similar thing - you don't eat then do you? That'll only make you throw up or shit more. shrug

I always have remind her that she's a cat and cat's don't eat ham sandwiches. She always replies with "SHIT! HOOK A KITTY UP!!!". It never works.

what im saying is i would never starve him. He has access to his dog food at all times. The vet recommend certain food for dogs when they have an upset stomach. Its up to him if he wants to eat it....

like us, when we have a flu, we dont eat regular foods, we drink broth or eat lighter foods.....I dont think we would starve ourselves....

Chocolate is another no-no for dogs. They can't digest that either.

Sometimes people are put off by "starving." Think of it more as fasting. Same thing; it just sounds better. I almost always fast a dog with an upset tummy. It just gives it a chance to settle down and work on getting better, assuming it's nothing serious. Unless a dog is hypoglycemic (mostly a problem with very tiny dogs and puppies), fasting for 24 or even 48 hours won't do any damage as long as the dog remains hydrated. Then start out by feeding small amounts of bland foods.

"People food" isn't inherently evil. It's just a matter of knowing what not to feed. It's not as daunting as it might seem... the majors are chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, and there are mixed reports on the turkey skin, but I err on the side of caution. The reports I've read make enough sense to me for me to be leary, especially since there are so many other good things they can eat with no problem. Generally, despite the different dietary requirements, if it's healthy enough for you to eat, it's ok for dogs. Everything in moderation, of course, but that's with anything and anybody, I reckon.

For nausea, I like fasting. For diarrhea, canned pumpkin with no spices works a charm most of the time. A couple of tablespoons will often firm 'em right back up. smile

also, cooked rice and boiled ground beef are good for tummy troubles in pooches..and if they won't drink, put a little tuna juice in water, and they might....its worked for us before..

Yes, boiled rice and very lean boiled ground beef (or chicken or whichever meat you choose) is good for a bland diet. When cooking rice for dogs, it's typically better to cook it to mush. Dogs don't process grains quite the same as we do, so it's usually best to overcook them (overcooked by our own standards, but "right" for dogs), especially for bland diets prepared for ill dogs. The more they're cooked, the easier they are for a weak tummy to digest. Actually, even for a healthy dog, more is better in regard to cooking grains if you're indeed going to give grains to a dog (there is much debate on grains vs. no grains in canine diets).

Amorbella, I'm glad your pooch seems to be feeling better.
