One Thousand Paper Cranes

It is said that folding a thousand origami cranes will make your deepest wish come true.

In 1955, a Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki was diagnosed with leukemia when she was 11. Her disease was a result of the radiation given off by the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Her best friend told her about an old Japanese legend that says if you fold a thousand paper cranes, your wish will come true. Sadako wished to get better, so she folded and folded. She completed over 1000 before dying at the age of 12.

In 1958, a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane was erected in Hiroshima Peace Park.

At the bottom, an inscription reads:
"This is our cry, This is our prayer, Peace in the world"

dove

Has anyone ever tried to fold a thousand paper cranes?
I'd like to, but it's so damn hard to do the crane. I've tried but can never get it just right.

I find Sadako's story so inspiring.

Can I have this thread since you won't be needing it? I typed "failure" into Google and want to tell the Org what I found.

My teacher read us that story in fourth grade and taught us how to make paper cranes. I still make 'em all the time when I'm bored. nod

I saw the Sadako statue at Hiroshima. At her feet were tons and tons of bunches of 1,000 paper cranes. My dad told me that schoolchildren will fold 1,000 cranes with their class, string them all together, and leave them with Sadako. pray

I can fold a crane fairly quickly, as I've had lots of experience over the years to perfect my craft. lol I used to rip up old homework and handouts in high school/college and fold them during class. I even ripped up programs during church and folded them there, too. I should do the 1,000 cranes - but what will I do with them then? hmmm

Oooh, thanks for the pics! They're wonderful!

I read that there is also a statue of Sadako in Seattle, of all places...and that if you want to "give" Sadako paper cranes, you can mail them to either the park in Seattle or the one in Hiroshima and they will be placed there.

I can't figure out the fourth step of the crane. The pictures don't make sense to me. pout

You can fold 1,000 cranes and make a wish!

Yes, what a great community project! Cranes of all media...paintings, drawings, crazy paper cranes, photographs of cranes, paper mache cranes...

I googled the Sadako photos. mr.green lol

I know which step you're confused on, and a lot of directions out there aren't very easy to follow. I would try to explain it to you on here but I would probably confuse you more. lol Ask around and see if anyone you know can show you in person; you'll probably pick it up right away. Or I can make one, send it to you, and you can unfold it and make it from that. lol

YES! I'm so glad you know which step it is! I felt like such a dunce trying to figure it out. If only there were an origami class around here...or written directions instead of those tiny faded diagrams...

That would be wonderful if you could send one! But wouldn't it get smooshed?
