A Sad Day... MG Rover, End of the road

It seems that years or short term thinking, underinvestment and even arrogance has finally caught up with the British 'Car Industry' as Rover, the only remaining British-owned volume car maker looks set to go into administration any time soon... sigh

This is very sad day for the UK and for the people of the West Midlands as everybody in this area knows someone involved with Rover in some way. sad Not only will the 6000 or so people employed at Rover's Longbridge plant lose their jobs, but the knock on effect of car dealers, maintenance and parts suppliers will hit hard!

Whilst there is talk of finance packages and rescue deals, it is all just delaying the inevitable.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/h...423181.stm

Yes.. it's been coming for years, but it just kinda sucks, you know!

Seriously though, do you agree that we are still reaping the bad crops from the seeds sewn by Maggie Thatcher back in the 80's?

Do you think Britain is destined to become less and less of a power in Europe and the World?

Or to simplify the question, are we going down the pan, like Gold319 says?

I think it goes back further than the 80's to be fair. I don't know enough about the car industry to comment further but just as the rest of the world decided they could make cars, and do a better job of it, we sit there thinking "No you fucking can't" ... and get proved wrong... shamelessly.

Going down the pan? No I dont think so... we have many other strengths as a nation. Saying that there is no way something like this will pass without having an effect sigh

nod We have a tendency to think we are the best in the world at things....without actually doing anything to prove it. And then we get left behind. Complacency is a very British trait, I think.
