My Own Private Idaho: Criterion Edition

drool

It doesn't take Pavlov to tell you that if someone puts "My Own Private Idaho" together with "Criterion Collection", yer gonna get me drooling in a hurry.

I just bought this gorgeous item today before work, and I am so damn near faking a sick attack so I can go home and watch it, that it's all I can do to keep myself from sticking a finger down my throat right now.

Two disc set. Comes with a beautifully-illustrated 60 page book. Lots of special features. Packaging so nice I just wanna eat it. The slipcase box that the DVDs and book comes in is so lavishly designed, THE INSIDE OF THE BOX is printed with images.

Let alone the movie, which I haven't seen in years but used to be in regular rotation in the ol' VCR. I had a lot of hope for Gus Van Sant after seeing this movie, but now I realize it was more about all the parts making up a really inspired whole.

Anyway. I can NOT wait to look at this...any other fans of this movie?

i thought rushmore was pretty okay; i thought royal tenenbaums was significantly more than okay; but when i saw the life aquatic, i went nuts for it. i really really really love that movie, and i think it's a shame that it fell under the radar. sad

no. seriously. none of them. people try to corner me on 'breakfast club' too, until i finally say FINE, I'D BE ALLY SHEEDY SO I COULD BE ANTISOCIAL AND NOT HAVE TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION.

i don't relate to any of them, except perhaps relating to all of them enough to enjoy the movie. shrug

i missed it in the theaters when it first came out because i was living in indiana at the time and it was really hard to catch movies like this. i remember when it came out on VHS, i was in college and it was the hot video rental - it was SO hard to rent, it was like the holy grail for me and my friends to get our hands on. we weren't disappointed when we finally got to see it. river phoenix is just wonderful in this movie, and it's one of the few movies where i can actually tolerate keanu reeves. i'm sooo happy this is on criterion - all their movies are a treat to dig into.

Imagine that opening scene on the big screen... The close-up shots of his face... I kept wondering what was happening... I saw it here: http://www.landmarktheatr...inemas.htm At the time I kept falling in love with gay men... So it was somehow touching to me to see River in this role. My friend Leah and I totally bonded after watching it... we both had a thing for gay men.
lol

I gotta see it again soon. nod I plan on getting all River Phoenix movies... I just got Stand By Me. giggle

Case

I bought "My Own Private Idaho" on DVD on Tuesday when it first came out. SIMPLY AMAZING!!!!! The extras are to die for, especially the phone conversation with JT Leroy and Gus. And I also dug that interview with Rain Phoenix and the producer.

It still kills me just how great this movie is. This is still Gus Van Sant's crowning achievement.

I saw this in the theatre too, when it first came out. I was still in High School and I was just discovering the whole indie film thing. It blew me away. Still one of my favorite movies.

Wow. Thanks for the heads-up. I want to get this. Haven't seen it in years. I did see it in theatres when it came out -- at Denver's Landmark Mayan theatre. If I remember correctly, it was the first movie I ever went to alone.
let me come over it's a beautiful day to play with you in the dark

I can't even remember how it ended. It was a bit boring. I think I must have fallen asleep or turned it off when I watched it. It was a bit arty-farty and pretentious.
