21 Nights Concert dvd??

Probably a misunderstanding, but you never know:
http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/FallConcert/prince-announces-america-concert-series/story?id=11886308

Prince will host several evenings of live music in December, he said at a news conference in New York City Thursday night.

Standing at a podium on the Apollo Theater's famous stage, the singer said the series, billed as Welcome 2 America, "is what we've all been waiting for: multiple nights of entertainment" that will begin "on a purple day in December 2010."

It was never made explicit whether Welcome 2 America will be a tour or a run of nights at one theater; it was clear, however, that it will be groovy.

"Bring your friends, bring your children," his purpleness told the audience, "and bring foot spray, because it's going to be funky."

Welcome 2 America's lineup will include saxophonist Maceo Parker, singer Janelle Monae, Minneapolis funk band Mint Condition, multi-instrumentalist jazz singer Esperanza Spalding, Cassandra Wilson, Graham Central Station, Sheila E. and others.

Prince will serve as the master of ceremonies and perform with his band, the New Power Generation.

After the brief press conference, at which Prince took no questions, the diminutive singer streamed a new song, "Rich Friends," and screened several minutes of his forthcoming concert DVD, "Twenty-One Nights."

Prince, wearing aviator sunglasses and a black jacket with gold ruffles, did not perform.

BET executive Stephen Hill later revealed that a gold-plated Fender Stratocaster guitar that sat unplugged on the Apollo stage during the announcement will be auctioned off after the live run. The proceeds will benefit Harlem Empowerment Zone, an economic recovery group.

"Come early, come often. I have a lot of hits," Prince reminded his audience. "No two shows will be the same."

Busy doin' something close to nothing

The quality was decent. The first preview they showed was Guitar. If recall correctly the vid started of showing the railings on a helicopter before it took off. There were a lot of aerial shots (possibly from the same helicopter) of London and the 02 spliced in between the performance. The second clip they showed was Controversy which went into Housequake. On the second clip, it was interspersed with fan interviews. One was by Sean Combs. Some guy with a camera pack asked me my reaction about the press release and the charity as I was walking out the Apollo. Not sure who he was affiliated with since I was trying to get out as quickly as possible.

This video is the one that was supposed to be on the limited iPod edition with the Deluxe "21 Nights" edition with Opus (40 minutes)

I would love it to be true that a forthcoming DVD is on the horizon, but I'm willing to bet that the reporter is making an assumption here that wasn't related to any factual statements by Prince or his skeleton crew.

Maybe if someone in attendance scored a press release, there might be something in there of note.

Fingers crossed...

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Any release would be welcome, but I'd rather much prefer Montreaux in it's entirety. I dont like how his live content is chopped, changed and spliced. Just a start to finish concert would be great even if the imperfections are left in.

I'm of the opinion that the reporter just jumped to conclusions 1+1 =0. shrug

IIRC, the BET guy introduced it as "21 Nights DVD." That, coupled with the high-budget aerial helicopter shots we saw...I think it's gonna be a DVD.

Truth be told, I tweeted that it looked similar to the Opus footage. My feeling is no one bought that, and he still wants to do something with that "exclusive" iPod video.

It would just blow the '20Ten Deluxe edition' away like it's dust.

A 21nights (good quality) dvd would be 3121times more exciting!

Oh no!

I don't feel like buying just for collecting reasons a dvd I won't bother watching.

I was evenunable to listen to the 21 Nights in London audio. Give me my real Prince, not this 2000s edulcorated version.

Plus, who can be interested in an official release?

Are Rave 2000 or Aladdin any worth? Really?

I concidered both Rave and Aladdin as quite miserable.

21Nights or Montreux would give an insight in how Prince is the best Live-artist.

The world hasn't been able to see this on dvd ever before in my opinion.

The Aladdin dvd could have/should have been an insight into how great a performer he is, but as we know, we ended up with a half arsed badly edited snore fest.

As anyone who has been following Prince for any amount of time knows, until the CD or DVD is in your hands, don't hold your breath waiting for it. I'd cite examples, but there are just too many.

In my opinion, and I have no crystal ball, the 21 nights won't see the light of day. Here's why: It was filmed 3 years ago. Prince is past that. He has musical ADD. He'll be knee-deep into a project, then another shiny metal object comes along, and he's abandoned the first project. I can cite dozens upon dozens of examples of this. What about 20ten? He's got just a few months to release it before the title is outta date. Is there any talk of him doing anything else with it?

Look at Lotus Flower, he released it, made 2 videos and one remix, then he's off working on the next thing.

I'm not saying any of this to be critical, just callin' it like I see it, after following him since the Purple Rain days. In a way, I kinda long for the old WB days. There would be a strong single release, then a 12", then an album, then more singles, while Prince was on tour. Tour ends, then he starts work on the next record. Now it seems it's: record an album, make headlines about releasing it in an out-of-the-ordinary way, make 2 videos, do a few shows and an interview all within 3 months, then that's it. Then all of a sudden there's an odd song popping up online with no explanation.

His inconsistency is consistent. biggrin And I wouldn't have it any other way.

There's another explanation for that.

Apart from a real record company being involved (thus taking care of BUSINESS), formerly Prince's albums were worth promoting, were worth having singles and 12"s, etc...

Now, Prince's albums are just crap: some cheesy old songs he couldn't be arsed giving another chance in his heyday are pulled from the vault, raped with stupid lyrics about his hypocrisy or his religion sect, and put together in a more than random way so that he can live the illusion that he's still making music.

And he still wants for that the same money he got back when he was REALLY WORTH that money.

Therefore, his only way to put that crap out is giving it away with lousy newspapers and using his latest COASTERS as an excuse to sell super-expensive tickets for a short series of crappy edulcorated concerts for which the fans must be the ones who TOUR.

He should attend some business school. But that costs money, and he's too mean.

Was there even a press release? I never head of a press release before where the people who attended weren't even sure what was announced. I haven't read through the threads, has it been confirmed yet that this is a concert series at the Apollo and not an actual tour.

I don't know if there was anything offered to attendees in the way of printed material. It looks like no, since no one has posted a scan. Nothing has been confirmed as to what exactly this "Purple day in December" entails. Logistically, it would probably be safe to assume a residency in New York as opposed to a traveling mini-tour, since we're dealing with so many people on the bill. Even the venue hasn't been narrowed down to the Apollo.

All we really know is Prince had a bunch of posters made and some kind of music will be played somewhere.

"20TEN Deluxe" seems to be a red herring right now.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

My guess is that it will start as a residency, but will go on to include shows in a handful of other cities - everything being vague because presumably the details aren't settled yet (ie. if they can't work things out with promoters, they can at least fall back on NY, which is evidently at least somewhat confirmed).

As for 20ten Deluxe, I still think that will be released on Wednesday (20/10 to many, including those he'll be performing for that night), continuing the build-up.

And then he'll follow Janelle Monae to Australia when she comes out for the Good Vibrations festival in Feb 2011!

And then he'll release the 21 Nights Concert DVD! Maybe boxed with a Welcome 2 America Concert DVD!
