Its funny when people say that Teena, Mariah or Whitney are "over-singing" bitches or "showing off their pipes" ya know? Dumb shit like that.

Thats where I'm sitting like "Isn't that the whole point of singing in the 1st place?" To be doing what most people aren't capable of? Whats the point of them buying your records and seeing yo concerts if they can do what you do? Thats the whole point of singing,,,to be OVER THE TOP.

Ain't nothing wrong to be "over the top" at all. Hell, you can't tell me that Chaka Khan wasn't "over the top" and look at her now? Most of the bitches out-there bite her style and they don't even know it. Off-topic but same point, I give Teena the props & juice 4 being "over the top" if she can touch my & most people's NERVEs then she can get away with saying "I'm bad, I got soul".

With all due respect, I believe my point has been missed.
Being "OVER THE TOP" has nothing to do with whether one has pipes/chops or not. IMO, it's a question of showing discipline, restraint and maturity in using your skills. For example, how is it that B.B. King can say more using just 5 notes at a moderate volume than some flavor of the month guitar-shredder can playing a billion notes per second at 150 dB.? How does that happen? I think it's that discipline, restraint and maturity thing.

This reminds me of a story a good musician friend told me.
He took an older Japanese business man to see a concert by one of these "shredder-type" players. After the performance he was taken backstage to meet the performer. They were introduced and the business man said to the performer using the most respectful tone of voice you could imagine "Ah, many notes....but no meaning." It that don't say it all.

As a musician yourself, you know for a fact that skilled artists "build" a performance. You don't "shoot your wad" on the 1st number. If so, where do you go from there? Nowhere but down. There's an ebb and flow that should be established to keep the emotional interest of "theAudience" (if you will).

Ella, Sarah, Nina, Nancy, etc./ all have shown mad vocal skills yet you never get the sense that they're "showing off their pipes". See what I mean? In the R&B category, I feel the same way about Aretha, Gladys and even Patti eek .

This is one of those things that's gonna boil down to personal preference.
If Teena touches your nerves, great. I ain't mad at ya.
She touches mine too, they just happen to be the wrong ones. wink

For the record, I personally have never consider Chaka "OVER THE TOP".

You still too cool 4 school in my book tho, Audience.

Love you too Harly. hug

Ok boo, you got me here lol yep, like Billie Holiday broke all convictions when she made the "Lady In Satin" album which support yo point, Ray Ellis(the album's arranger) said she missed up EVERY note in the book yet she seems to touch a sensitive nerve, there was a deep substance behind that lack of range. Yes I know what you mean.

But I still think that Teena can hold her ground, vocally & depth-wise nod

I Have every Teena Marie album ever made and I love all of them, but the one that stands out the most is her independent label album called PASSION PLAY. With songs Warm As Momma's Oven, Wild Horses, Slow Grind, Smoothe Tip and many other excellent songs.

Love tracks like " "You Make Love Like Springtime","Tune In Tomorrow", "Where's California", "The Ballad Of Cradle Rob and Me" " Irons In The Fire" "Revolution" and " Portugese Love", and "365", "Aladdin's Lamp", "Shadow Boxing"...that's the kind of stuff i'm talkin' about!

Now this is coming from a true Teena fan. Not many people know about Shadow boxing and Cradle Rob, 365, Robbery, Irons in the fire Revolution. These songs didn't get much radio play so that meant you had the albums and played the whole dayum thing. ME TOO!! music
I LOVE TEENA!!!

I was with you until you got here. Patti??? puleeze she kicked off her shoes during dayum near every concert one year during her "over the top" singing. Chaka.... especially during her Rufus days was ALWAYS over the top... it was her style... that was imitated in da day by the likes of Natalie Cole and Stephanie Mills.
