Whitney biopic #1,628 has found director!

EXCLUSIVE: Harriet helmer Kasi Lemmons has come on to direct I Wanna Dance with Somebody, the upcoming biopic about the late Whitney Houston from TriStar Pictures. Lemmons will replace Stella Meghie, who insiders say parted ways with the project due to creative differences. She will remain on as exec producer.

“Early in my writing career I developed two projects for Whitney, and I had the opportunity to meet her,” Lemmons said. “She was a tremendous, incomparable artist, and her story is as awe-inspiring as it is tragic. I feel privileged to be part of bringing her life story and music to the audience.”

Naomi Ackie is on board to play Houston, a role she landed following a spirited auditioning process that saw a number of actresses vying for the role of the iconic singer.

“Preparing to play Whitney Houston has been an incredible experience,” she said. “I’ve learned so much more about her and myself than I could have imagined. I’m so excited to get on that film set and honor her legacy! With Kasi on board, I know we can create something truly wonderful.”

Alongside McCarten’s Muse of Fire Productions, the film is being produced by Pat Houston (Whitney) on behalf of the Houston Estate, Davis, Larry Mestel on behalf of Primary Wave Music, and Denis O’Sullivan (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Jeff Kalligheri (Submergence), who are also are financing via Compelling Pictures. Primary Wave Music is a partner of the Whitney Houston estate.

Sony and TriStar Pictures will release the film in theaters at Thanksgiving in 2022.

bored I like Whitney but for some reason,her life story doesn’t really interest me.This seems like it will be a very predictable biopic: she becomes really famous then destroys her career by taking drugs and marrying Bobby Brown.I guess it’s because so much of her story has already been told (repeatedly),but this news doesn’t excite me.

‘The Bodyguard’ Gets Remake at Warner Bros.

Matthew López, the Tony-nominated playwright of “The Inheritance,” has been hired to write a reimagining of the iconic Whitney Houston film “The Bodyguard” at Warner Bros.

The new movie will be inspired by the 1992 romantic drama, which starred Houston and Kevin Costner. The original grossed more than $400 million at the worldwide box office and has what is considered the bestselling movie soundtrack of all time, with several chart-topping original songs from Houston.

Lawrence Kasdan of Kasdan Pictures, and Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback are producing the new film. Rideback’s Nick Reynolds will executive produce. Kasdan was the writer-producer of the original. Lin has been attached to the property since 2011, which has seen delirious speculation over the potential lead cast for years. Combos from Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson to Channing Tatum and Cardi B have been floated. No cast has been set for López’s script at this stage.

Right? She lived a large part of her life via the tabloids while she was with us. Really, there isn't much left to tell that we haven't already read in tabloids or seen in what seems to be endless documentaries.

No disrespect to the legacy of Whitney Houston but her story has been done to be damn! Wasn't there a Lifetime flick about her a few years ago? And how many documentaries have been made about her? We know her story. Enough.

If you seen it you KNOW that was NOT a representation of her legacy. Get it together.

it seems as if her estate just can't figure out what to do.They seem confused...trying desperately to find a way to spotlight her legacy.They're still doing that ridiculous "hologram tour" in some countries disbelief

‘Leave Her Alone’: Dionne Warwick Blasts New Whitney Houston Biopic

Dionne Warwick wants the people to let her cousin Whitney Houston “rest in peace.”

Since the sudden 2012 death of Houston, several biopics and movies have been made about the singer’s life and legacy. The problem though is that some of the previous films were not approved of or created by Houston’s family or loved ones. With this new biopic, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” that problem has been eradicated, as music producer Clive Davis is working with Houston’s estate to create the film. In fact, Houston’s sister-in-law Pat Houston is producing the film on behalf of the estate.

However, it seems that despite the family being involved, Warwick is still not pleased with the idea. After confirming that she has no involvement with the movie herself, she expressed her disapproval of it. “I want them to let Whitney rest in peace,” she recently told the Los Angeles Times. “Leave her alone. Ten years [since she died] — it’s time to let her sleep.”
