That's an unrealistic view of it, though. And unfair to a woman.

First, she does look like herself. She looks like Madonna, and always will. She looks like Madonna at her age now.

Second, she's 62. "Express Yourself" came out when she was half that age. Literally, she was 31 for Like A Prayer. Nobody looks the same at 62 that they did at 31. And frankly, she - nor any woman - owes it to anyone to look the same for decades on end but guys get away with "aging gracefully" or whatever.

If "the plastic surgery went into overdrive," then how fucking different is she at this point? Not a lot, really. She doesn't exactly look like a Real Housewife, Jocelyn Wildenstein, Mickey Rourke, Janice Dickinson, or anyone else who has "went into overdrive" with it. To say she's unrecognizable is pure hyperbole, not reality.

yeah, those years of working out for 2 hours a day, then doing a 2 hour show paid off in the long run. Plus she does yoga or whatever, and generally loves to be busy and breaking a sweat.

I do think she's had fillers and Botox, but what woman hasn't? You can throw a rock in any direction in most major cities, especially NY or LA and hit someone who's had some Botox. I have friends who got it for migraines, nothing else. So there's that element, too.

But has she had major reconstructive surgery? I don't believe that at all. I'm glad she's not so altered that she looks like a cartoon of herself (looking at you, Rupert Everett, Jennifer Grey, and Rene Zellwiger). I can deal with a little Botox.

Absolutely. I don't look like I did in my 30s and I've had nothing done.

But isn't it her desire to still look 31 — and the giant game of make believe she asks the public to go along with — that poses the problem in the first place? She's selling a product that literally doesn't exist: the person in the photo doesn't look like that, the one on the cover of the album is basically a drawing, and the videos are all edited to provide us with only the most 31-year-old looking angles and wigs. Every move is meant to convey "see, guys! I still got it!" but it's a fiction now, and her lyrics follow suit: jumping into pools with clothes on, kissing everyone at the party, being a cheerleader again, "a girl gone wild" and doing drugs and waking up in South America with Maluma.

I hear what you're saying about the impossible ways we expect women to age gracefully, what bullshit, the impossible ways we tell women they must be, just in general, but I think to really make you're point Madonna would have to look like Patti Smith. I also don't think it's a concidence that Smith is in her 70s, has apparently never had a filler one, makes strange tibetan folk music about Artaud, but has has also never been more popular, charming, or culturally relevent.
