I don't think anything made Shanghai Surprise a flop except maybe those faux pockets. Reminds me of something James Brown used to wear according to "Get On Up" . lol cop

These are from the album cover photo shoot, which sorta makes me remember how Janet did the photo for Rolling Stone and only showed the face and the belly on the album. M kinda did that for LAP in 1989.

THAT^ is exactly why the Like A Prayer era Madonna is the best. I still stand by my words. nod She was born a brunette and should have been proud to show it off more.

I like brunette Madonna, fah sho. That "Like A Prayer" video is so nice for that reason. And even the album cover has her dark hair, but then immediately, it's over. "Express Yourself," "Cherish, "Oh Father," etc are all blond. It's a good look for her. I think she rocked the blond so much for so long and such iconic looks while blond, that she does it knowing people expect that of her. Yet during American Life, and a lot of Ray of Light she had dark or varied hair, not that platinum over-done blond.

I've actually been looking back on her looks during the Girlie Show tour and I'm really enjoying it! biggrin She still looks quite sexy and beautiful and it's the circus performer vibe on this show makes it very pleasant.

God, I wore this VHS out back in the day. It's such a solid fucking show. Dare I say, it's better than Blond Ambition. BA is a stellar show, don't get me wrong. But it has a couple of lulls. As does TGS with the "Like A Virgin" section leading into "La Isla Bonita," which is one of the best stagings of the show, IMO. The raised platform with the red curtain, the dancers above, below, then coming together for a big rousing dance number.

"Justify My Love," is a gender-bending moment (as is most of the show), that starts with an obvious (and necessary) lip sync but goes live after. Also, when she comes out from the lift, and just keeps going, because she's on a step stool and is taller than everyone else. Not only is she the only one dressed in male and female clothing, but she's also showing that neither matters when you're the biggest in the room. The black and white checkered background adds to the hypnotic/trippy effect. Also, blending all that with the late 19th century aesthetics is just amazing.

I love how "Express Yourself" and "Deeper and Deeper" segue into "Why's It So Hard," then "In This Life." Such a good segment from a disco number to a song about someone who died from AIDS.

"The Beast Within" is excellent interpretive dance, acting out the verses in Revelation that she's reciting, about The Beast and the AntiChrist, one being mortally wounded, then coming back, etc. Every moment in it so specific and interesting.

The whole show is supposed to be like the older vaudville/burlesque shows. I enjoy the clown element throughout, and it ends up being her at the end, although both male and female (black and white) played the clown throughout the show. Her shows are cathardic and this one really inhabits that.

Her best tour is the virgin tour, it was all about the music instead of all the extras and sex stunts onstage

Having said that, I went to sticky & sweet and mdna tours and they were cool

For me, Hard Candy is one of her worst albums. She did not make great music with Pharrell.

MDNA is a pretty decent album, but that tour is just amazing. Her shading Gaga during "Express Yourself," with "Born This Way" and a snip of "She's Not Me" is worth the price of admission. I think watching the Tait Stages shows about how they built the lifts on the stage (called The Matrix), and set design as a whole really pulled me into it even more. I love stuff like that. The DVD is just stellar. Her best since The Confessions Tour. TCT alone was worth it to see her performe "You Thrill Me" (the early version of became "Erotica.")

Her last great album was Ray of Light, although I'll give Madame X major props. One of the most un-Madonna albums she's done. Reminds me of when Beyonce put out BEYONCÉ, and it was a hard left from her typical sample-ridden-with-overlayed-acapella-vocals stuff.

After Ray of Light, she seemed to really get off on the electronica type approach, and it just went dowhill from there. Her albums were more about what producer she was working with rather than what songs she was crafting. Any message she had got muted amongst the lack of or overt production. I can't stand American Life, Hard Candy or Rebel Heart. It's just trash, to me. I still have the Hard Candy deluxe with the package of peppermints in it. I honestly forget if I even own Rebel Heart. I know that tour is the first DVD of hers I've not purchased, but I probably will at some point.

It seems ever since American Life, it's slowly become less about the music, and more about the "art" of it. Confessions On A Dance Floor is an exception there, because she just made a great damn dance record which harkens back to her debut album. Sure, it was political and social, but it was still music. Listenable. The three I named are unlistenable to me. "Bitch I'm Madonna" is just absolute shit. Anytime there's a vuvuzela horn (isn't that what it's called?) on a Madonna song, she's lost all inspiration. Somehow, she found it on Madame X again. She's been working on the concert DVD which will probably be out late summer (just a guess, but she said she's very close to the end).

I think a lot of the Madame X stuff would've been nice w/ brunette hair.

I love this show as well. And Erotica is such a great album, I'm impressed. I'm sure people didn't expect songs as tender as Bad Girl and Rain amid Madonna's reputation from the sex book. I love it.

I think some albums have EPS within them. I always felt like there's a middle section of Erotica that is an EP unto itself. "Rain," "Why's It So Hard," "In This Life" is such a sweet little section of the record.

"Waiting," "Thief of Hearts," "Words" is a hard section to get through. Sometimes it loses me. It's not filler per se, but it's not necessarily as strong as the first six songs on the record. It lulls a bit.

However, Erotica has that street vibe about it. Rough vocals, an urban rough mix sound. Her and Shep could really make some great music together. The great thing about Madonna is that she really envelopes the whole vibe of an album throughout its production. I think people like Janet (dare I say) learned from Madonna with that.

When Madonna was a boy toy, she was a boy toy throughout. Then when she was a blond Jersey girl character, she was that throughout. When she was Breathless Mahoney, she was that through the whole DT/BAT campaign. I think it's where the "reinvention" thing came from, but she's really just inhabiting her role in her music at that time. It got to the point that even the artwork on her singles were reflective of the album artwork itself. (Other times, it had varied or was so odd and different, it felt like a single from something else.) I like that about her. Janet did the same thing with Control and onward.

So M's capped tooth, the slicked back hair, her boobs out at a Jean-Paul show, her having a sexy tour with naked folks, interracial love, gay love and whatever else was just part of the whole Erotica vibe. Conservatives hated it, but even M said, "I'm interested in pushing people's buttons, and being provocative." Sometimes, it's for the sake of it, but I believe many times she did that not only to explore her own sexuality or stance on sometime, but to push others to do the same. Like "how bad is this, really, when you think about it?" Kudos to her on that.
