You know that Play That Funky Music is a ripoff of Slippery When Wet by The Commodores? A lot of us back then thought it was the Commodores with Lionel's classic Southern Funk drawl. Then we found out it was some band named Wild Cherry. We still loved the song but were extremely disappointed it wasn't the Commodores. Wild Cherry also covered the Commodores I Feel Sanctified on that same album. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Technically, that's a black band with a white singer. A better example would be the Muscle Shoals studio band (known as The Swampers) who played on a lot of R&B and soul records, such as Aretha Franklin's late 1960s albums and also some Wilson Pickett & Staple Singers stuff. I'll Take You There and Aretha's Respect &Think, that's The Swampers playing. There's also Dennis Coffey & Bob Babbitt who were in Motown's Funk Brothers. Dennis had a few hits himself like Scorpio. The jazz pianist Bob James had a lot of acts sample his music, like on Run-DMC's Peter Piper. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Absolutely! If we have to nominate one nominal "funky white dude", it HAS to be Rod Temperton. He's an astounding enigma. A true legend. A middle-aged white Brit who wrote very "black" music to some of the biggest black artists. And pretty much ALL of his songs are my favorites - including the artists who performed them, usually.
