Joni Mitchell is a master singer-songwriter. Prince was besotted with her talent. There were more legendary musicians who were in awe of her musical and lyrical talent., ie., Leonard Cohen, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Jaco Pastorius, Charles Mingus.

She also had a profound impact on Elvis Costello, Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Seal, Beck, Cassandra Wilson and Diana Krall.

She moved easily through genres and created her own chord structures.

She was the complete artist and one of the best contemporary songwriters.

She's the front runner. There are a lot of jazz artists, like Ella Fitzgerald, who deserve mention here too.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

It's probably not good but when I think of really, really talented I always think of Prince who writes, arranges, produces and sings his lead as well as background vocals and can do a lot of different genres of music. Off of the top of my head I can't think of any female this could apply to which seems odd because there has to be somebody. Perhaps it someone who is not as well known.

Also one of my favourites of all time. I know people criticize her voice, but I find it so soothing and she’s always heavily involved in the writing process and can really dance

The first time we met during velvet rope era, she passed by us at the studio where she was recording an interview, and when she walked by, my cousin and I stood up and she shook our hands smiling and security told us to sit down

Then during rockwitchu tour, my bff and I were vip and got to watch her do sound chdck, and several of us in the crowd including my friend and I got backstage passes to meet her. She got a photo with us and then I called out, I love you and she turned around, smiled and said I love you too and I was in awe!

Joni Mitchell is likely in the top ten as a singer-songwriter. I'm not certain if Prince felt he was quite on par with her. He had mad respect for her.

She crossed genres as well and played with some of the greats, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus,

Jaco Pastorius (Bass), Chick Correa, Wayne Shorter etc.

If we are talking about the most talented female artist, she at least needs to have written her own lyrics/music and be respected by the greats.

Do you think Madonna is on par with Joni Mitchell? I do.
