the criteria I would offer is singing (range, control), dancing, songwriting, and noticeably above avg on at least one instrument. that said, my once upon a future baby mama (Janet) doesn't make this list, nor does Mariah, Whitney, Madonna, etc etc. My one vote is cast for Aretha: piano prowess, writing, singing, (range includes her pinch hitting for Pavorotti on ND at the Grammys, remember that!), AND she could "rock steady" in her prime

If I had to pick someone over Mariah, Aretha is definitely a great voice. Really love her voice but don’t feel like I know enough of her songs
