So lucky you saw her for that tour! I’ve just seen her at sticky and sweet and mdna, was way too young for a show like that back then

J. Randy Taraborrelli wrote that Like a Prayer was a turning point's in Madonna's career; "Every important artist has at least one album in his or her career whose critical and commercial success becomes the artist's magic moment; for Madonna [...] Like a Prayer was. [Madonna] pushed onwards as an artist, using her creative wit to communicate on another level, musically."

The performance of the I'm Breathless songs began with "Sooner or Later" sung atop a grand piano, followed by "Hanky Panky", where Madonna stood in front of a microphone and sang it. She was dressed in a striped vaudeville-style corset, playing the part of a nightclub singer. Near the end Madonna joked: "You all know the pleasures of a good spanking, don't you? [...] When I hurt people, I feel better, you know what I mean?" The final song of the segment was "Now I'm Following You" where Madonna danced and lip-synched with dancer Salim Gauwloos, who was dressed like Dick Tracy. Regarding the "shameless promotion" of Dick Tracy in this segment, O'Brien said that "along with her yen for artistic expression, Madonna has always had an eye on the bottom dollar... [But] the Dick Tracy section is the least dynamic part of the show".

They're not wrong. It was the least interesting part of the show. The lip syncing part w/ "Now I'm Following You Pt 1" and "pt 2" seems ridiculous. I didn't mind "Sooner or Later" or "Hanky Panky." Also, the segue between that and the Art Deco portion was weird. The men's costumes were weird, the affect on "Material Girl" was annoying, and the talkign portion before "Into the Groove" felt awkward. I did like "Cherish."

For me, the best section was Religious. The sets, the selection of songs, the visuals - just fantastic.

It's so interesting to see that Madonna compared to the one in MDNA tour or Confessions tour. She's probably always a little annoying, but back then she was fucking insufferable I bet. LOL And I say that with love, but even she's admitted how different and selfish she was back then.

There's a video on YouTube of six different shows, all collaged on the screen. New Jersey, Nice, Barcelona, Paris, Houston...somewhere else. It's just "Express Yourself." But to see her precision to do the same show every single performance, from the smallest hand jesture or whatever speaks to her discipline as a performer.

Just as a note, in the Truth or Dare documentary, the performance of "Express Yourself" is actually from Paris, but the audio track is from Dallas (I think, but it's in the U.S.). So in the collage video, you actually see the movie under the Paris banner. It's why you can see a little unsyncing issues here and there w/ the vocals (they're minor).

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Wow dude, thanks for the behind the scenes info(which I always love)

Her discipline as a performer and the artistic professionalism, really showed up fined tuned in the next tour Girlie Show

Not the biggest Madonna fan, but do love this one. I REALLY like Love Song. I remember being disappointed when I first heard back in 89 but it has grown on me BIG time. But the whole album works for me. She's diggin deep with the songwriting for a few tunes on this one that is for sure.

Come on girls
You believe in love
'Cause I've got something to sing about it
And it goes something like this
Don't go for second best, baby
Put your love to the test
You know, you know you've got to
Make him express how he feels and maybe
Then you'll know your love is real
You don't need diamond rings or eighteen karat gold
Fancy cars that go very fast, you know they never last no, no
What you need is a big strong hand
To lift you to your higher ground
Make you feel like a queen on a throne
Make him love you 'til you can't come down
Don't go for second best, baby
Put your love to the test
You know, you know you've got to
Make him express how he feels and maybe
Then you'll know your love is real
Long stem roses are the way to your heart but
He needs to start with your head
Satin sheets are very romantic
What happens when you're not in bed
You deserve the best in life
So if the time isn't right then move on
Second best is never enough
You'll do much better, baby, on your own
Don't go for second best, baby
Put your love to the test
You know, you know you've got to
Make him express how he feels and maybe
Then you'll know your love is real
Express yourself
You've got to make him
Express himself
Hey, hey, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not
And when you're gone he might regret it
Think about the love he once had
Try to carry on, but he just won't get it
He'll be back on his knees, so please
Don't go for second best, baby
Put your love to the test
You know, you know you've got to
Make him express how he feels and maybe
Then you'll know your love is real
Express yourself
You've got to make him
Express himself
Hey, hey, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not
Express yourself
Express himself, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, better make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not
Express yourself
Respect yourself, hey, hey
So if you want it right now, better make him show you how
Express what he's got, oh baby ready or not
Express yourself

I wrote a song years ago called "Twisted," based on an older song I wrote (whose title I forget at the moment, but it was a gospel song). In both versions, I replayed a simplfied chord pattern, and the bassline from the "Express Yourself" remix. I'm not totally sure of the remix chords for her, but mine weren't the same. Same key, started the same. The bassline may be off a note or two, but in general, it's the same. Most people that hear it say, "I feel like I've heard this before." And then I would tell them. "Oh yeah!"

The song also uses some vocoder/choir type effects that are reminiscent of George Michael. I was purposely going for a GM vibe on the song, despite it being based on a Madonna riff. I guess I went all Stevie Nicks on it, rewriting someone's song.

I just loved the "Express Yourself" remix (from the video), and I wanted to use it somewhere. So instead of sample it, I just replayed a version of it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

You should take Gaga to court for gimmick infringement, bro.

HAHAHA I did write it years before anyone knew who the fuck she was. If I was a dick, I could possibly do that and press for a settlement. Get some cash out of the ol' girl. Although, Madonna would turn around and fuck me, and not in the way a gay boy would've hoped for. lol lol

Jose (on bottom), Luis (left), Oliver (glasses), Kevin Stea (above Oliver; was in many vids including "Black or White" and "Blood on the Dance Floor" by MJ), Donna Delory, Carlton Wilburn, Madonna, Gabriel (RIP, behind Madonna), and Salim aka Slam. Not sure where Niki is in this.

Gabriel died in the mid 90s from AIDS. He was really upset that Madonna included the now famous kiss between him and Slam during a session of truth or dare. He was very low key, just wanted to dance, and remain private. He begged Madonna to not include it, but she sorta shamed him by saying, "you should be proud of who you are, who cares what people think?" It wasn't that people didn't realize he was gay, but it wasn't anyone's business otherwise. There was a whole court case around some of it (Oliver was part of it, too.) His mother still holds a bitter edge toward all of it. I can't fully blame her.

Jose is from the House of Xtravaganza in NYC. He recently danced with Katy Perry on SNL during her performance of "Swish Swish."
