Madonna's controversial 'Like a Prayer' marks 30 years since causing an uproar

madonna-like-a-prayer.jpg?ve=1&tl=1?ve=1&tl=1

On March 3, 1989, Madonna released the hit song, “Like a Prayer.” And it was a monumental moment unlike no other before it at the time.

After three back-to-back multi-platinum albums, a record-breaking world tour, it seemed like the singer was on top of the world as she readied the release of her fourth album, "Like a Prayer," in March of 1989.

The best thing on the album is the patchouli.

I remember being pretty dissapointed with the 'Prince-Madonna' collab; I expected so much more.

I also remember liking the title song when it was new, but I can't hear it since then, it's so massively overplayed it hurts.

Overall I rate the album in the lower ranks of her discography. Like: at the bottom of her pre-American Life carriere.

"She'd start writing lyrics and oftentimes there was an implied melody. She would start with that and deviate from it. Or if there was nothing but a chord change, she'd make up a melody. But, a lot of the time in my writing there's a melody implied or I even have something in mind. But she certainly doesn't need that. [...] She would write the lyrics in an hour, the same amount of time it took me to write the music, and then she'd sing it. We'd do some harmonies, she'd sing some harmony parts, and usually by three or four in the afternoon, she was gone".

—Producer Patrick Leonard talking about working with Madonna on Like a Prayer.

Her greatest album still, IMO ... when I got rid of my Madonna vinyl a little while ago the only one I kept was LAP. The inside of the sleeve still smells of patchouli oil biggrin

LIKE A PRAYER

Life is a mystery
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer, you know I'll take you there

I hear your voice
It's like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes
Oh God, I think I'm falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer, you know I'll take you there

Like a child
You whisper softly to me
You're in control just like a child
Now I'm dancing
It's like a dream
No end and no...

Like a child
You whisper softly to me
You're in control just like a child
Now I'm dancing
It's like a dream
No end and no beginning
You're here with me, it's like a dream
Let the choir sing

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer, you know I'll take you there
When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel a power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there

Life is a mystery
Everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

Just like a prayer
Your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me
You are a mystery
Just like a dream
You are not what you seem
Just like a prayer
No choice, your voice can take me there

Just like a prayer, I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me
Just like a prayer, I'll take you there (I'll take you there)
It's like a dream to me (oh)
Just like a prayer, I'll take you there (I'll take you there)
It's like a dream to me (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Just like a prayer, I'll take you there (oh)
It's like a dream to me

Just like a prayer
Your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me
You are a mystery
Just like a dream
You are not what you seem
Just like a prayer
No choice, your voice can take me there

Just like a prayer
Your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me
You are a mystery
Just like a dream
You are not what you seem
Just like a prayer
No choice, your voice can take me there
Your voice can take me there
Like a prayer

Everything about this era was perfection. The album(s), the tour, the videos, the documentary.

There are multiple Blond Ambition Tour shows on yoUTube. New Jersey, Nice France (which was the laserdisk). One guy even uploaded the broadcast & laserdisk versions side by side. You realize how shitty the shots are sometimes when it's being broadcast live, but are fixed before it's released on home video. (Same for The Girlie Show, which has a comparison videon on YT, and Janet's The Velvet Rope Tour original HBO broadcast.)

I remember seeing Madonna perform some new song on MTV VMA, with a new dance routine that just rocked my world. It was "Express Yourself." The choreo was there, but her outfit wasn't quite where it ended up in the video or on tour, both of which came out after (to my knowledge). She wore Army green pants and a double breasted suit jacket. Little did we know the onslaught of music and video to come.

I remember smelling the album cover (cassette) because it had perfume on it. I loved the (temporary) Pepsi commercial, the 12" singles. She seems to use remixes a lot in concert. "Express Yourself," "Like A Prayer" and possibly "Keep It Together" (I forget) remixes were used on the BAT.

Like A Prayer really was her Purple Rain. Big opening numbes, dance songs, a ballad duet (in the 3rd track position, which Prince favored a lot for ballads), a couple of songs that segued into the other, some backwards stuff, some lighter fair. It was a pinnacle album for her (as was Purple Rain for Prince).

Since the song was brought up: The thing about "Like A Virgin" is that she's done a totally different arrangement on every tour. The Confessions Tour version was the closest to the original since The Virgin Tour. Or she'd add something to it. On TVT she added the bridge from "Billie Jean." On Who's That Girl? Tour she added "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch." On BAT she did it in a Middle-Eastern inspired version. The Girlie Show was cabaret. She skipped it on the new two tours, but brought it back on Confessionss Tour.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Her second best album to me, or her best, I'm not sure, incredible tour and the title track might be her best song ever. This is her Billie Jean or her When Doves Cry. Like A Virgin is her Thriller.

"I think there was a point when we realized that it was the title track, and the lead track, and it was going to be a powerhouse. It became obvious that there was something unique about it. And that somehow we made this thing work: with its stopping and starting, and a minimalistic rhythmic thing, and the verses, and these bombastic choruses, and this giant choir comes in. This is ambitious, you know?"

—Patrick Leonard's thoughts on "Like a Prayer".[6]

Love Song is the third track on Madonna's fourth album Like A Prayer. The track was co-written, co-performed and co-produced by Prince.

Basic tracking took place on 13 March 1988, at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

The project was initially titled Daisy Miller to disguise the artists working on the track (there was a lot of media speculation about Prince and Madonna working together and possibly being linked romantically).

Madonna and her musicians worked on the track later in 1988, and Prince added additional overdubs in mid-November 1988 at Paisley Park.
