Powerful and sad video. It was filmed really well and I like the madame x writer persona appearing in this. I wonder which video is next

Because there are guns in it? It's more like "Deeper and Deeper", an underrated video IMO.

In general, people (not you) are missing the coorelation with the Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida. It's a harsh video, but beautifully shot & edited.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Actually, I'll confess to not having stopped to listen to the whole album yet lol I meant it more as the song's political vein while still having a very dance-pop instrumentation, as well as having Mirwais as a producer. I've read about the Pulse nightclub references later on, Madonna's getting slaaaaammed at guns-rights groups, which I'm happy about as it shows she didn't get comfortable with age and still speaks her mind.

The Pride performance hype should hopefully also help, and those TV appearances. One week at the Top is exceptional in this digital age, I'm glad she did it and hope she isn't too bummed if it does not stay there very long. I wish she would do more televised performances vs sit down interviews. I don't see sit down chat interviews encouraging people to buy the album really.

And she knew exactly what she was doing, so the NRA folks can just have a seat. "Slammed" is relative. If she's feeling the slamming (plot twist: she ain't), then maybe it's valid. Otherwise, it's just an attempt at a clapback for their own purposes. It's freedom of expression, and if anyone is about 'spressin' herself, it's Madge.

I haven't always agreed with her on things, but at least she's saying it. I can disagree and enjoy the music. Sometimes I think Madge gets mouthy for the sake of it rather than having something interesting to say. It got really boring there for a minute in the last few years. Her proclivity to push buttons used to have substance. Then she just started scraping the bottom of the barrell for stuff to be controversial about. (example: "Holy Water" with dancing nuns in panties - wow, just yawn).

I feel like Madame X is not only political in the right ways, but incredibly interesting and unique musically. If you are happy that she still speaks her mind, then I would wonder why you haven't listened to the album yet. It really is her just not giving a fuck musically and doing what she wants regardless of anyone's opinion. Probably the most interesting and engaging album since Confessions or Ray of Light. Get on it!

I agree, the thing that is killing me about her social is that she does these teasers (Future Remix, Crave acoustic) but she won't post the whole thing and it breaks my little fanboy heart.

Just lack of time really. Will do as soon as possible and do one of those fancy reviews as well. biggrin

Speaking of American Life, I'm meaning to hear it again as well. I always loved it, and didn't understand all the bashing when it was released, besides being an album with lyrics considered unusual for a dance-pop musician. Madonna's mainly known for her use of sexuality as a theme in her work, but I'm always inclined to enjoy her much more because of her love songs - which AL has a lot. It doesn't sound like anything else released during that same time, and I don't think is still very common for popstars to make an album with that kind of lyrical content. I hope the fans and critics might review it at some point.

American life is amazing for sure and so underrated. I used to play it a lot when it came out, for some reason she experienced a creative peak when married/living overseas , maybe it’s the last one cause madame x is good too

Well, the bashing - at the time - came because we were only a few very short years out from 9/11. The country was very pro-war and anti-terrorism, more than ever before. Bush had incredibly high ratings during those early days of the attach on Iraq (a country that didn't attack the U.S., by the way). War is a rallying tactic and for Madge to come out and have a grenade be tossed at a Bush look alike - a lookalike who is buddying up with a Saddam lookalike - was napalm. The Re-Invention Tour was very political, too. So that's why the bashing, at the time. It was about the message, not the music.

I think it could be dismissive and short-sighted to say Madonna is "mainly known for her use of sexuality". She's went far and above that, especially after something like Erotica. Bedtime Stories, Ray of Light, Music, American Life were far less sexual albums and visuals than its predecessors (Erotica, Like A Prayer). I'd think that religious iconography and political vices are more evident in her music (after those first 2 or 3 albums) than anything else. She's had 14 studio albums, a couple of greatest hits packages, a remix EP, and all those live albums. By this point, it's balanced, mostly, but I think her challenging dogmatic systems or political traditions far outweighs the times she flopped out a titty or made a pussy reference. In fact, I think she knew the overt sexual innudenos and visuals grew old after a while. People grow up and find new things to focus on in life. She definitely transitioned to other topics by the mid-90s.

I hate American Life. LOL (true story)

I'm a fan for more than 10 years, I know all that... when I say her sexuality is more abrasive it's because it's a sort of sign people who aren't fans associate with her. I meant it as people don't instantly identify Madonna with "love songs", even though to me, as a fan, it's the aspect of her music that I enjoy the most. American Life is one of my favorite albums and the song I like the most from it is X-Static Process, same goes for Like A Prayer and all.

Hoping the X on the title means that Madame X may drag this one out on the upcoming tour.
