This video reminds me of the rapper Sampa The Great. I wonder why it's on B's channel instead of Disney's like Aladdin's songs

Beyoncé’s ‘Homecoming’ Documentary Lands Six Emmy Nominations
By Chris Willman July 16, 2019 Variety

It’s going to be a busy awards season for Beyonce. She could be up for Grammys or Oscars in the next six months, but she’s already made a splash with the fresh crop of Emmy nominations. Her documentary/concert movie “Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé” has been nominated for six Emmys, and a win in most of those categories would go to her personally.

The Netflix film is up for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), directing, writing, music direction, production design and costumes. Beyoncé would share in the award for any of those categories except the last two, being credited as co-director, writer and co-musical director as well as a producer.

Beyoncé had previously been nominated for four Emmys but has not yet won one. Her prior noms were for variety special and variety special directing, both for her visual album “Lemonade” in 2016, plus best short form entertainment for her 2013 Super Bowl halftime show and special class program for “On the Run Tour.”

Her awards reach may stretch in the months to come as “Spirit,” the original song she co-wrote for “The Lion King,” is expected to be submitted for Oscar consideration. At the 2020 Grammys, either her “Lion King” companion album “The Gift” (which comes out Friday) or the soundtrack for “Homecoming” could be in contention.

In a few categories, “Homecoming” will face off against a showcase for other formidable music stars. The competition for pre-recorded variety special includes “Springsteen on Broadway” and “Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney Live From Liverpool.” The Bruce Springsteen showcase is also up for variety special directing. The Paul McCartney special is nominated for variety directing, writing, editing and sound mixing.

Reviewing “Homecoming” upon its premiere in March, Variety called it “a euphoria experience… What’s documented here is surely the first concert in history you could imagine Cecil B. DeMille and W.E.B. Du Bois being equally proud of. … For some of us who were actually there at Coachella, rewatching it on film a year later, ‘high water mark in 21st century entertainment’ actually almost feels like it’s underselling it, just a tad.”

I knew she would make this Movie and Soundtrack about HER. elton john didnt do this with the original movie. she hasn't done any press like the rest of the actors in movie. there was on need for a stand alone project.

I totally agree. She could have just added a few tracks to the original soundtrack but instead she has to do her own album and make it all about HER.Didn’t she just put out a new album a few months ago...some kind of big ‘live’ album or something?

Sounds more like what Madonna did for "I'm Breathless". "Batman" was different as P was making music to be in the film, whereas Breathless was tunes that were from and inspired by the movie. I am not a Bey stan but I don't mind this little power grab move of hers.

The two Beyonce Videos are stunning & "The Gift" album (now on iTunes, but I am hoping for a physical release as I am old school and like to buy albums) sounds great. I do think she may have waited a few weeks though to let the soundtrack / movie get some of the limelight first, instead of grabbing the limelight for herself. I love Beyonce, but I do get sick of the constant money grabs of this couple (Bee & Jay) that is for sure, it would have been much more classy to release the album a little later and that would also help generate interest in the movie for longer too?

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

LOL, Mrs. No Talent And Stealing is once more in the news today, that this whole video was litterally stolen from some lesser known black group from the South.

You can dislike Beyoncé all you want. However, to call her “no talent” is pathetic. Now, I can see if you were speaking of a singer who can’t keep a tune, can’t sing live, etc. BUT, that’s not Beyoncé. Btw, I am NOT a Beyhivet, I just don’t like people saying ignorant things just because you don’t like or are jealous of Beyoncé. This woman works her ass off, she gives you your money’s worth in video and live performances. At least, give her credit for what she has-talent and hard work. There is no way any rational person can claim that this lady doesn’t have talent and that she is an extremely hard worker. #@$& that you don’t like her.🤨

So is the lion king the gift considered a beyonce album or just a soundtrack heavily featuring her, the way Madonna and Whitney Houston did for their movies?

I like her, but also think she’s really fake at times these days. I like her older albums better than her recent ones and she reached her prime onstage a long time ago

Prince was actually only asked to offer a song or two. One was Baby I'm A Star and then he did 200 Balloons or Party Man instead

Most of the Batman Prince album were 'outtakes'. They did not ask him for a Prince -Batman album

‘The Lion King’ Feels The $1B Global Box Office Love Today; Disney’s Fourth This Year
By Nancy Tartaglione July 30, 2019 Deadline

The Lion King

Bringing Disney’s running total of $1 billion-plus global grossers to four this year, the studio’s The Lion King will put its paw across the coveted threshold today. Getting there in 19 days, the Jon Favreau-directed CGI/live-action remake of the animated classic is at $999.4 million worldwide through Monday, with $360.9M domestically and $638.5M from the international box office.

Along with Aladdin, The Lion King is the second release from Disney Live Action to reach the $1B milestone this year and the sixth ever to do so. Other billion-dollar pics from the studio in 2019 are Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel. Toy Story 4, currently at $919.1M, is the next title to cross $1 billion for the year, getting them to five. And then there’s Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which would make a potential seven mindboggling $1 billion-plus grossing films, unprecedented for any major studio, and a bar that many rivals in town don’t expect to ever surpass.

Disney could do half the business that they’re doing this year and still beat their nearest rival studio at the box office, Warner Bros. This is the new world order for many years to come (and arguably has been looking back): Disney is in charge.

The Lion King opened on July 19 domestically, ripping up the record books with a $191.8M start and has continued to be No. 1 at the daily box office.

Before he hit North America, Simba padded into China early with a $55M debut. On its second overseas weekend, TLK added $275.2M in 52 markets, 51 of which were new and with each giving the movie pride of place atop their respective box office charts.

This past frame, TLK helped push Disney to all-time records both worldwide ($7.67B) and overseas ($5.09B) for a studio in a calendar year. It’s only the end of July, and Disney still has on deck Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker before the end of the year.

The movie is the second highest release of 2019 in EMEA and is the highest-grossing release from Disney Live Action in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Central America, Trinidad, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Hong Kong, Italy and Japan have yet to release Lion King. Through Monday, the Top 5 markets are China ($115.8M), UK ($48M), Brazil ($44.2M), France ($42.2M) and Mexico ($38.4M).

I'm curious as to why no-one is yelling 'hey Beyonce! That song of yours The Gift is basically a rip-off of You're The Voice by John Farnham.

Or did I miss that protest?

It's certainly not possible to call Beyonce talentless.... she clearly has talents.

However I do think she's an atrocious singer and am genuinely baffed as to her popularity.

She might have a powerful instrument but she has no clue how to really communicate with it, in my view. Warbling, yelling, are the things one does these days just to be heard above the crowd.

Frankie Beverly Responds to Beyonce Covering His Maze Hit 'Before I Let Go'
4/24/2019 by Rob LeDonne Billboard
https://media.pitchfork.com/photos/5cc11e20152fd583476e1abe/2:1/w_790/Frankie-Beverly-Beyonce.jpg
Beyonce's Homecoming album and Netflix special contains the entirety of her groundbreaking April 2018 performance at Coachella. As the first black woman to headline the festival, Bey ran through the biggest hits of her career with the help of Destiny's Child, Jay-Z and a marching band made up of people from HBCUs across the country, thus christening it Beychella in the process. In addition to chronicling her historic performance, the superstar also blessed fans with a new bonus track via Homecoming: her spin on the 1981 Maze single "Before I Let Go," which runs over the credits of the film.

Written and sung by frontman Frankie Beverly, the smooth ode originally peaked at No. 13 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, later garnering a reputation as a cultural touchstone. In between performances during his tour with Maze, Billboard caught up with Beverly and talked about the backstory of the unlikely cover, initial inspirations and his plain admiration for the singer. "She's done so much, this is one of the high points of my life."

Let's go back to when you first heard that Beyonce was interested in covering this song. Did someone from her camp call you?

Well, that's kind of the shocking part of it. She's a great friend of mine, but I didn't know she was going to do this. I was hearing stuff, but I didn't even want to approach her about it. She kept it quiet, until her people called me one day maybe a week or two ago. When they played it, that's when I heard the first draft of it, and I was blown away. It's a blessing. It's amazing how she works, she's very smart. I'm caught off guard, but in a beautiful way. She's such a sweet person too. She's a very sweet, religious kind of person. Then the way she just released it, it's off the chain. She's done so much, this is one of the high points of my life.

How far in the past do you and Beyonce go back? When did you first meet?

We met years ago. I think she was in her teens at the time, if that. I guess she really liked Maze and the song even then, so her mother brought her to our show at the Houston Rodeo. I met her then for the first time but didn't know much about her. She wasn't a big hit star then, but we wound up working together a few times since and she's always been very, very nice to me. This cover was just like she is. She didn't make a big deal out of doing this song, and that's just the way she works. I love the way she does her thing.

What inspired you to write and record "Before I Let You Go" in the first place? Take me back to that moment in your life and career.

Boy... It was about a relationship I was in. It was just up and down, and by the end of it I wrote a song because I was feeling I needed to get out of it. I was so into the girl, but it just wasn't working out. I was thinking, 'What am I gonna do?" and that thought inspired the song. I was going to try to do all of these things "before I let go." It was a situation I had to get out of, but I was in love. It came out of me pretty good, too. Even the music, it was all a gift from God. Today me and the girl are still close, but we don't see each other like that. But it was as real deal love type of thing.

I think one of the things that makes this song unique is that it's about a sad and stressful subject matter, but musically and the way you sing it, it's actually very carefree, smooth and laidback.

Yep, plus it's an uptempo song. When I think back on it, I was really in trouble, but what came out of me was this big, uptempo song that was really a love song. It's funny.

"Before I Let Go" came out in 1981 and it was a respectable hit, but what do you make of the fact that this song has lasted through subsequent generations? This is something that came from this tough personal experience of yours, yet here we are 38 years later and it's still connecting with people.

Yeah, that is a good point. I just thought it was a great little song, but I never thought it'd be all this. It really changed everything for me. It was a huge song at the time, and it's one of those things this band will be able to carry on forever.

I wonder if you're getting reactions from people in your past, or even people who weren't previously familiar with Maze catalog who are now diving in and discovering you for the first time?

Yes, I think you hit it right on the head. I feel bigger than ever! I feel like I have a huge smash out there. It's definitely a blessing. Other people have done my songs, but the way she did this was in a class of its own. I'm hearing from people I haven't heard from in years. She's done something that has affected my life. I haven't even spoken to a publication like yours in quite a while. So it's changed things around for me.

I just heard the whole album for the first time, and enjoyed it enough to know I will stream it again. I'm not sure if I will inspired to make a playlist from it or even download it, which I do with my absolute favorites. Her style seem to borrow both from her recent and remote songs, which is a nice blend.

Bey, the creation, seems to be a lightening rod in how it triggers reactions. I do get tired of the self-promotion, but my reaction is moderated by how she celebrates black women and black culture and not just herself. For so many years women and black women especially were expected to be humble and submissive, so in many ways she represents the opposite of this. She is a force, like it or not.
