Only listened to the singles yet, but that made me wonder... Is the fact that Madonna's last few albums, going back to MDNA if not Hard Candy appear incredibly generic to me and failed at making as strong an impression as all her earlier works the consequence of the fact that I'm growing too old and she refuses to grow old? Do those records appeal to teenagers and people in their early 20's in a way similar to the way she managed to remain relevant up to younger audiences more or less until Confessions On A Dancefloor, or do the new generation fail to identify with Madonna the same way I do now?

I have nothing but respect for her, her discography is remarkable, but am I the only one to think she'd need something like Ray Of Light or I'm Breathless now, an album that would either reflect on her maturity (and her core fanbase's) as ROL did back in 98, or that would feel timeless and not trend-chasing the way IB, despite its flaws, felt in 1990?

for me it's the same. i appreciate that she still puts a few very good songs on her albums,
even if it's only one or two sometimes.

but after "confessions", yeah, it's been weird. this album feels better but it's nothing like
her 'classic' stuff.

i guess to each their own tho. because i think the way i feel about her newer work is how
a lot of fans on this site feel about the later prince albums (post 80s, basically). i can't
really see how they find so little to enjoy in his post 80s stuff, to me it's all really good and
i enjoy it equally.

so perhaps that's the same for a lot of madonna fans, they still enjoy the albums we think
of as lesser or totally uninteresting? i guess, probably.

a portion of it is also that i don't find madonna nice or interesting anymore as a person. she
has zero relevance or interest for me anymore, beyond her music. not that she did very
much to begin with (i don't care about most artists whose music i enjoy, i don't care what
they are like or what they do in their day to day life, except if they have something really
interesting or relevant to talk about). madonna became the most intersting to me around
the time of ROL, which went hand in hand with the fact that she also made amazing music
at that time.

there are so many artists i used to love but now i don't care about them anymore, which is
a bit sad, i guess, but probably an age thing. i still check out their albums and put one or
two songs on a playlist, but it must be a bit of both. the artists themselves have less to say
or to add to their work and become more pedantic and we ourselves become older and less
impressionable, i guess.

i still listen to these people's albums as a whole and give them multiple spins, just out of a
sense of, yeah, a sense of i don't know what. and once in a blue moon people surprise you
with something really very beautiful and good, like marianne faithfull's "negative capability"
or pj harvey's "let england shake" etc.

madonna though, i don't know. it feels like she has little to say and a very limited sort of
vocabulary to express herself. even her political or social commentary songs never really
go beyond the surface or just naming problems instead. which would be fine, if she didn't
act like she's joan of freakin' arc here to sacrifice herself for the world. it's so hard to look
at her these days.

lol. i sound way too negative. at least i'm expressing myself too strongly, i don't hate her.
i still think she's cool and everything she did up to 'confessions' was just fine and she has
an amazing legacy and did many great things that she can be very very proud of.

Quite possible, but you have to wonder if thats your problem or her problem, or if its even a problem at all. I used to love animated cartoons as a child, now I watch some of the things I obsessed over like WTF?

In a different way, yes. As she was closer in age and appearance to teens and the like, her appeal was stronger. Of course as she grew the relatability may have declined. But she is an Icon and similar to a new film from your favorite director or reboot of an old favorite, nostalgia can kick in. The "my parents listened to this, I wonder why" factor is also very important considering Madonna. Kids today almost have to wonder why she can still have such an appeal now in comparison to her mainly departed cohort.

Once I worked at a call center where it was Top 40 all day. This was about 2017. Madonna's 4 Minutes came on once and I cringed a little, as an older fan. Then suddenly the younger employees started humming along and the room basically turned into a karaoke session. I was shocked. Is it the Justin feature? Could be. Is it Madonna's wise choices to keep her name in their minds and music libraries? Absolutely.

I read ya. I never lost interest in P's music because he kept growing as I was. Except maybe for HnR1, he never released anything after WB that sounded to me as it was aimed to 15 years old kids while I was long past my teenage years, and I could enjoy HnR1 because it was a one-time experiment, not something he did with each new record. Maybe Madonna still grows too, and I don't get it, but to me it sounds like suddenly the trend-chasing and the appetite to seduce younger audiences that made her so great for the first 20 years has turned against her. But as I said, maybe it's just me and I grew too old and too disconnected from commercial pop music.
