TV One's Unsung 2017 1st quarter line up

Fat Joe, ‘90s girl group SWV and soul/funk pioneer James Brown are among the artists comprising the new lineup for TV One’s longest-running show, Unsung. The acclaimed R&B, soul and hip-hop music series will premiere its 10th season on Jan. 4 (8 p.m. ET).

Rounding out Unsung’s forthcoming slate will be episodes profiling fellow artists Jon B., Lenny Williams, Case, Dave Hollister and After 7. The series is narrated by actor Gary Anthony Williams.

Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

James Brown, seriously. That is a spot that can go to someone really Unsung.
It was a freaking movie on him 2 years ago. And a great HBO documentary also from 2014 that will cover everything on Unsung. JB is the inventor of Funk and a top 10 artist, EVER. TV One, do better.

And BET just did a episode about Fat Joe's record label about 6 months ago. That should cover Fat Joe.

I think there's enough James Brown stuff already out there, if someone wants to know about him. Mick Jagger released a documentary a couple of years ago. I don't know what Unsung is gonna have that hasn't been said already. I think maybe they should have gone with Shirley Caesar. Her first record came out before James and she's still performing and recently got a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. I don't think Unsung has done much gospel. The only one I can think of is the Clark Sisters.

And why three uninteresting 90s singers? Aaron Hall or Tevin Campbell's story would have been better.

This is the worst season yet. Only Lenny Williams story will be interesting IMO.

I still don't why they did an episode on Meagan Good (or Montell Jordan for that matter). razz

Even though they're doing JB, maybe that gives hope for other high profile artist like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Etta James, Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson.

But still James Brown, I thought they were reaching with Otis Redding, George Clinton and Sly Stone. But this one takes the cake.

Sam Cooke already has a documentary too. My mom has it. I think there might be another one I saw on PBS once. Sam also has a book written by the same guy who wrote those 2 books about Elvis Presley. I saw a P-Funk doc a few years ago on PBS on the program Independent Lens, so that covers George Clinton I guess.

True but that Cooke doc probably came out decades ago. It's not evenon youtube.

The one my mom has came out in 2003, it's not that long ago. Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, Bobby Womack, Sam's brother & sister, and others speak in it. Lou and Bobby are dead now, so a new one wouldn't have them. The DVD also has longer interviews that weren't in the broadcast version as extra features. It might not be on Youtube because there's songs in it and the ones owned by Allen Klein's company ABKCO have been blocked on Youtube in the past. I don't know if that's still the case now.

Completely agree with everything u said. I hate that they are featuring 90s singers. Imo, it's too soon for that. How the hell is Fat Joe unsung when he's still having success. He has hit songs on the charts right now. And how in the hell is James Brown unsung? I think they're losing the plot. Next they'll be a Michael Jackson unsung episode.

James Brown as an Unsung episode is a waste of time. Clearly this man is definitely NOT unsung. What's next, Michael Jackson? Seems like they are running out of artists to showcase....that is unless some past artists are refusing to do the show. shrug

I love me some Jon B., so I don't mind them doing one on him. Dude can still sing and perform too, however, Case...David Hollister and After 7? Huh? They had some cool songs but really? lol It's mind boggling that they still haven't done one on "The System", but then again, they could've pulled a Stephanie Mills and said that they refuse to do an Unsung episode. Who knows, but I do know that is one that I really want to see.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

It seems every season they do one that's a head scratcher. JB, Otis Redding, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Sly.

I can see why some acts would turn down appearing on this show. It's less about their actual music, and more about gossip. James Brown does have a lot of gossip style topics in his life. I don't think there's been many episodes on acts who had a clean life, as I guess much of the audience would find that boring. There's also the case that they have to get others to speak about the subject and also feature acts who have enough video footage to fill out the show.

Finally will be nice to hear JON B story. He has been in the game for a good 21 years and still is making music to this day. Even though it is good, not really anyone is feeling him like that. I am glad his story is about to be told. Couldnt be any happoer.

I agree with above post on James Brown....REALLY?

A Martha Wash Unsung would be dope.
The most prolific pop singer most people never heard of.
She has more well known tunes than most big name pop stars.

Now you're talking. I've been dying to see one on Starpoint, Cameo as well as Five Star, Mtume, Switch (with interviews with Greg Williams, Phillip Ingram,Eddie Fluellen,Jody Sims) The Deele,The Time.

Shirley Caesar I'd hardly consider Unsung

James Brown Unsung? No way! Pretty soon if his is the route they want to take every black or R & B artist is Unsung unless they are Aretha Franklin,Michael Jackson,Prince,Diana Ross or Stevie Wonder.
