So after a spin of the new CD I'm left feeling very underwhelmed...

Yes excellent production but nothing besides 24K Magic really sticks out for me....

All the songs copy 70s funk or 90s R&B

24K Magic - Gap Band, The Time, Roger Troutman Zapp band

Perm - JamesBrown
Vercase on the Floor - The Jets
Finesse - straight up stolen Bell Biv Devoe beats

I'm sure the kids that love Bruno will think this is the best thing ever since they have no idea its all a rehash of what we've alreay heard sad

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Remember there is only one destination and that place is U
All of it. Everything. Is U.

I'm digging Perm.

I appreciate the fact he honored these classic sounds.

He touches on 80's-90's classic R&B. You hear MJ, Prince, JB, Bobby Brown, Zapp and more.

Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away
and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.

It really doesn't, though. I mean of course it's homages (or rather just a return to a genre that hasn't been revisited in YEARS in the mainstream) but it still has modern production on it and has his own spin on it. Uptown Funk sounded like a bigger rip off of other things(and thats not produced by him) than 24K Magic or any other music on the track. Plus it's the same genre, so OF COURSE there'd be similarities. Not everyone can be a grand breaking creator, they can sure as hell innovate and put a fresh new spin on stuff though

This is why no one attempts to recrreate funky music, you have people like you claiming its stolen. LOL

To be honest guys I'm low-key tired of watching people criticize Bruno for 'stealing' old sounds, and even if he did a twist on it like Locked Out of Heaven he'd still be bashed. What the hell?

The artist in question is not David Bowie or Miles Davis or D'Angelo, this is Bruno Mars, he grew up admiring R&B music and this is his take on it.

Those who brought up Prince or MJ comparaisons are the ones to blame (I might've agreed one day that he's the new Prince but I wasn't even serious, loved pissing off some orgers who claimed Prince is a god etc...). Point is: just because he's a brilliant live performer doesn't make him a groundbreaking musician.

I've heard the album. I ain't hating it. In a musical landscape of more garbage and hot piles of shit than not, it's sorta cool to hear these throwback sounds, from a new album. I'm getting big 90s R&B vibes like Bell Biv Devoe (as mentioned), Bobby Brown, plus Alexander O'Neal, Gap Band, Zapp, etc etc.

I'm not sure it's that easy to call back to a sound in such a great way. But he's done it. It's new old school. Where's my acid washed jeans, and my Doc Martins?!

Shame he doesn't have a huge hype base. We see all the other artists and people don't seem to actually like Bruno like they do... literally every female pop act and some male ones

Yeah and mainstream music today needs someone like him.

At least give credit where it's due and acknowledge him for being able to emulate old school sounds to near perfection.

When I was looking for a GIF, I looked up "tossing salad GIF". This was down on the list of results, and I found myself laughing out loud at it, and even when I go back to look at this thread. It's still funny to me.

This is the first album from Bruno that I like. I'm loving the 80s and 90s R&B throwback vibe, with a dash of earlier JB funk. I appreciate the nostalgic value, as it totally reminds me of the music I listened to in my childhood and teen years. Sure, he's not reinventing music in any way, but for a mainstream pop album, I think it's good.

I don't care that he's "stealing old sounds" because who doesn't these days? There's nobody original in the charts anymore. And besides, originality doesn't necessarily equate to good. Plus, I'd take his brand of "funk" over most of what else makes the charts. My problem with him is that I just don't like any of his songs that I've heard, which is all of his singles. I might download his new album to see what all the fuss is about but from what I've heard of it so far, it doesn't really sound like much of a departure from what he's done before. Which is great if you're a fan of that kind of stuff. Unfortunately, I'm not.

Whoa!!!! I may have to buy this album. I'm loving what I'm hearing so far, this is feel good music. Who cares if it's not completely original or not, the point is, he's not doing some boring trendy trappish-shit hop type music that everyone seems to be on the bandwagon of right now. I don't look at this as he's trying too hard to be "funky" or ripping off the R&B artists of the 80's & 90's...if anything, I take it as him paying homage to the great music of the past and putting his own spin on it. I love it. thumbs up!

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
