I don't have his album, but damn, at least he writes with guitar. (I prefer Miguel's guitar sound).

He's growing on me. The radio ruins it for some artists and listeners by over playing them and forcing certain songs relentlessly upon the listening world. I don't listen to radio much anymore. And altho I don't own any of his work I don't mind hearing his songs occasionally. Seems like a real nice down to earth guy too. But that's just me I guess. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

I can't stand Sheeran's voice. Bleh. And his lyrics are childish cliches. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

The man writes trite, twee, puppy cute songs, that are complete garbage. Even aesthetically he is no pop star. Just an ordinary looking, talking, singing, guitar playing. I hate the everyman just like you pop star. Unfortunately a lot of people eat up his weak sauce trash. His elevation is a condemnation on modern music. He should be the sixth or seventh member of a boy band who nobody likes but tolerates because he is part of the group.

I agree. I don't see what the big deal is about him. He promotes fake authencity that is masked with industry agendas. I notice after that Stevie Wonder tribute last year the industry has been promoting him heavy.

He actually is a multi-instrumentalist if I'm remembering correctly. I believe he plays the piano and violin as well as guitar. His lyrics aren't that deep I agree but he ain't that bad either. I prefer him over a lot of the other crap they play on mainstream radio like Ariana grande for example. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. He does play instruments and you can understand what he is saying. It is a sad state of affairs when you are popular because you are doing the bare basics of music.

No, I don't agree, I think he's very talented and a lot better than most people give him credit for. He is a fine acoustic guitarist and has written some genuinely good songs.

[Edited 9/27/16 3:42am] Unfortunately, I've had to endure every song he's done because my cousin, who I live with, is a big fan. Personally, I hate his voice, I think his songs are crap and he's not that great a guitarist, really. Everything he plays is very simple. Now, he COULD be really good but as far as what he's released or played in concert, which is all I have to go on, it's very simple. As for not looking like a model, yeah, he's not the prettiest man in the world. Definitely not my type. But he's got bigger problems than how he looks. Though, he seems to be doing well for himself so fair play to him. It just proves that you don't need to be really talented to have a few hits.

This. He still seems average to me. I respect that he plays an instrument and writes his music but these things doesn't automatically make him a stellar talent. Like you said, people in this era are perceived as "amazing" for doing the bare minimum

I wouldn't claim to be great at guitar myself, just started playing properly earlier this year. I'm more of a piano/keyboard girl. But even I can play the majority of his songs. A friend of mine, who is a musician of some merit, (and for what it's worth, is an actual fan of Ed Sheeran) reckons Sheeran is a very basic player too. Mind you, he still likes Ed Sheeran despite that. To each their own, I suppose.

Never saw the appeal. There's nothing special about him. He just envokes neutrality whenever I see him or hear his music. At best, Ed is tolerable but at worst, he's boring. So he can play a few instruments and writes his own songs which by virtue alone makes him more talented than many of today's top stars but he doesn't get a pass for being better than bad. His music feels so hollow, I don't understand how people can hold him in higher esteem than the average friend who carries a guitar with him.

Either I'm better than I thought I was or, more likely, Ed Sheeran's stuff isn't difficult to play. Considering I've only been playing properly for about 6 months, I'm by no means an advanced guitarist so I won't claim to be able to play EVERY one of his songs without difficulty, especially because I try not to listen to him and i never practice his songs. But it doesnt seem that hard. I'd almost be tempted to actually try to learn all of his songs just to see if I could and how long it would take. But I don't think I could put myself through it. Like I said, to each, their own.

No star power (that I can perceive), multi-instumentalist, capable singer and able to compose songs (of questionable quality). This is an achievement, but one that is reached by many, including session musicians. While some session musicians can get to an extreme level of ability and technique not all of them are pop stars. I can't speak for everybody voicing discontent here, but personally it seems what he offers is significantly disproportionate to his fame and acclaim. Could I be jealous? It's possible, but it is just ponderous how well he his tofu bland songs and completely basic persona and stage prescence has got him. I am not a Beyonce fan, but can kind of see where she gets her recognition from. Ed Sheeran is the guitar playing dude version of what Adele is to aor balladry.

It's a sad fact that I hear local singer/songwriter/musicians perform and they are much more talented and compelling than this guy. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Lukas Graham deserves this kind of success, he's got a far better voice and much better lyrics and overall sound than Ed. I'm in love with the Bieber's song he wrote, though.

Sure are I think he is okay but is still young and has potential to become much better. I do agree with the criticism that his bland and MOR. However, for him to be targeted like this is hard to believe given how much pop crap is actually much worse than him.
