What about Garth Brooks?

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I wonder why this starts in 1986? Could it be because Thriller alone outsold almost all of Janet's albums put together.

Epic fail dude.

Why are some Janet fans on a never-ending quest to elevate her above Michael and Madonna? lol nuts This is something I have noticed on the Org for awhile now.Let's stop this madness now.

Thriller outsold everything, so that's not really saying all that much. A more interesting question is: why are some music fans so obsessed with record sales? As if they need to "prove" that their favorite artist is "better" than somebody else's favorite artist because (s)he sold more records. That doesn't make sense to me at all.
Oh and Garth Brooks isn't really that big here in Europe, so it doesn't surprise me that somebody from Serbia hasn't heared of him.

Why should Thriller not count when comparing MJ/JJ album sales? It is a Michael Jackson album.

Also, Janet's albums didn't make hardly impact in most European markets, compared to MJ/Madonna, who were always single and album artists in all markets.

Janet will never be as big or as popular or as relevant or as legendary as Michael or Madonna. I know some Janet fans can't sleep at night because of this, but it's true.

I'm not saying Thriller doesn't count, I'm saying there is no point in comparing anybody's record sales to Thriller, because they always fall short. So when it comes to sales figures, Thriller is the all-time winner. My main point was, why this obsession with sales anyway?

Yeah. That. And why only the US and Japan? What about the UK and Germany. Michael, even without Thriller, sold over 8 mio albums in the UK. This whole pitting her against him and only using the things she looks good is pathetic. The fact is, his career started in the late sixties and no matter how you put it, his overall body of work will always be more succesfull than hers.

It's not including Janet's previous albums or Thriller because it starting from 1986. What it shows is that, though they may've sold more overall, once Janet became competition for them she slayed. And that's what's important.

Makes no sense at all, if you only wanna look at the periode Janet has been releasing albums, you should start with 1982.

I wonder the same thing. It is usually some Janet fan who starts this comparison and then gets in a huff when a Michael fan responds to this kind of "stirring the pot" thread. What really irks me is the hypocrisy of Janet fans. They whine and bitch about bringing Michael into a Janet thread;yet, it is usually a Janet fan who has to bring Michael into the conversation in a vain effort to TRY and elevate her above him. The sad thing is that it makes her and her fans look desperate. Janet fans need to allow her to stand on her OWN merits and stop trying to make her bigger than Michael. The truth is that she will NEVER be as big or more influential than her brother, Michael Jackson, and her fans need to stop trying to make her bigger than Michael. Again, let her accomplishments stand on their own and stop the jealousy.

And where is Mariah carey? 54 million US sales

Her album #1 already sold 3,25 million in Japan and that's one album.

Speaking as a Janet Fan, I do find the OP's topic very interesting. It's not like anything in that post isn't true, although this IS the Org., where Janet doesn't get a whole boatload of love, so starting a thread like this will probably seem like shit-stirring to Janet haters or those who are apatheitc to anything having to do with Janet Jackson. That being said, I think this is the perfect climate for Janet to return. Celebs are talking about her on social media on a near-daily basis, and what with Madonna's latest album flopping, the climate is just right.

Mariah Carey destroy's their case, so she's not mentioned.

And to single out Japan, when all of them in the mentioned period supposedly only sold a measly 2 mio albums is ridiculosly pathetic, as is omitting Carey, who obviously outsold all of them with one album (are these numbers mentioned even correct?).

I would love for her to return, especially with J&L, but she won't be as succesfull as she was. She's gone for a long time, and her last albums didn't do well. Madonna's album flopping doesn't help Janet, it actually shows it's gonna be hard for her to sell.

What i do wish once she returns is for her to use her singing voice and drop the lipsynching. She really build up a bad name with the lipsynching. She has a good voice for dancemusic, i say use it.

Mariah sold much more than any foreign artist in Japan. MUCH more. Celine and Whitney are following. Overall there are only 6 female artists that sold 2 or more million albums in Japan: Mariah, Celine, Whitney, Madonna, Janet and Gaga. But I think it's stupid to compare safe artists like Mariah and Celine with Janet and Madonna. It's as stupid as comparing Michael Jackson to Bjork. Two worlds.

Madonna's music is sugar pop, of course that would sell better in Europe than edgy and experimental R&B. No one denies it. But Janet's impact on European markets was still big.

What defines success? If an albums shifts a million the first week out? If it does 100,000 the first week but garners great reviews? If it sells a shitload AND has good reviews the first week? Success is relevant, but I do hope that she reteams with JJ/TL again as well.

Sweetie, is it really that bad she didn't sell the most albums of them all?

She just didn't, face it.

She didn't sell the most albums in the US, in Japan and worldwide.

Stop making a fool of yourself lol

well you said Madonna's album was flopping...although it got great reviews.

So why did you say it was flopping? Didn't you just define success yourself?

I disagree that Discipline flopped. It debuted at No. 1 and sold 507,000 in the U.S. - equal to almost every Barbra Streisand or Tina Turner album, for instance Foreign Affair sold less than 500,000 in the U.S. It also sold Gold in Japan (100,000). The best selling album of 2008 globally sold 3 million. All other sold much less. Having that in mind, and the success of lead single Feedback (it didn't need any young artist to be featured on it to chart), I think that Discipline did pretty well.
