I totally dig what you are saying.. but some people dont like rudimentary rock & roll.. since Prince 'does it all'... I can see how some Funk fans might think D'angelo is out Prince-ing Prince.. In the end you are 100% correct as well...

Prince is a musician that doesn't operate in a box-not with his music, songwriting, career choices and certainly not with his bands. "Funk fans might think D'angelo is out Prince-ing Prince" is not an insult to Prince but really a knock on D'angelo. At some point, fans have to allow D to get out of the shadow of his predecessors. By saying "D'angelo is out Prince-ing Prince" is essentially saying D is performing Prince's past musical ideas more than the man who pioneered them. I respect D'angelo as a great contemporary soul musician whose music echoes the best of past Black music while forging a legacy of music that speaks to modern day issues and times. To me these cats are mutually exclusive figures in music. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

D is a soul musician. Prince has never been that. Prince once said "I am music" and that's true. D'Angelo is black music. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Prince is known for recruiting band members not only based on skills alone, but also other factors such as looks/race/sex.
3rdEyeGirl is a solid band but the songs on PlectrumElectrum suck so they don't really get a chance to shine.

I suspect that he's saving Another Life for the next single so he doesn't want to over-expose the song.

In some cases, I'd argue D has done the same. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I dont see how he could possibly 'Hurt' future sales by playing a song everyone in his audience owns already..?

To be REALLY honest with you.. Im very 'put off' with how much 'Prince' i see in D'angelo.. it boarders on a Joke/Parody to anyone who actually was there during the Parade era. Everybody stop on the One.... Good Gawd!.. Chicken Grease... Jesse cut em.. Too MUCH!

I've seen the group ay HOB in Boston...Prince's presense alone is like MJ, Lebron or Magic.,,he elevates the group..3EG will blow D's group out the water,,,Yes, it reminds me of what Prince did in 19fuckign 86 ..you act like P cant go recreate that; he can if he wanted..l
Now with said,, enjoyable show but dont be so dismissive of what Prine is doing as Prince is doing what Prince wants to do. Further, Prince made the sound and band change to the revue format for hit and run in several months back in 86 how long has it taken D...get real people [Edited 2/19/15 6:27am]

I agree with the whole P thing. At some point, D has got to stop that. I wonder what P thinks of Black Messiah? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Exactly. I got much respect for D'angelo but there's a huge difference between taking inspiration from someone you musically admire to just flat out d-ridin'. D is an incredible musician when doing HIS thing. D has carved out a lane for himself as a great soul musician who still uses the musical and creative devices of the best r&b music of the past and IS pushing the music forward with his latest album. But even Lenny Kravitz, as derivative he is grew out of his fandom and came into his own for good. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

If I'm totally honest, yes Jesse was difficult to pick out during the Charade, but that was probably the only time. I think they turned him up immediately after that, without being asked. Pino sounded crisp at the back, but that's prolly just a volume thing. It was noticeably quieter than any (small) P gig that I've been to. Agree that the sound at the Roundhouse last year was the BEST sound I have ever heard at a Prince gig. Amazing show from start to stop. There were some equally bad sounding shows too.

Interesting about the D ripping off Prince too much.
I don't notice it as much as I used to, but my friend who came to the D show with me in Birmingham actually burst out laughing at the 'parody' as he put it. He thought the Charade was just too much like the revolution and that 'Untitled' although brilliant was clearly too far Prince.
Personally, I'm just happy he's here, playing and with an off the scale band.
The difference I find with this band and a Prince band is primarily how relaxed they are, whilst holding together some TIGHT grooves. Blovely.

lol i didn't think my comment was that big of a deal. it's a subjective opinion. 3rdeyegirl is good but Vanguard is better. Chris Dave will run circles around Hannah and Jesse Johnson vs. Donna? are you kidding me? Ida might actually have a fight in her though. Yes D's stage show is based off the parade tour but that has nothing to do with his quality of musicians.

D echoes Prince just like Prince echoes James Brown the Parade tour is legendary and dam near untouchable, but the James Brown influence is all over it. There's nothing wrong with that. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

3EG can play with skill but they have no style or real feeling. They're like the Monkees but with a few more lessons. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"
