D'ANGELO LIVE!!

The D'angelo sticky seems 2 have locked itself else I would have posted there.
I saw D in Birmingham 02 Academy last night. Wow that man is currently on fire!! He played for over 2 hours & his band were tight. Great set list with loads of new material mixed with the favourites. It was the 3rd time i've seen him & he keeps getting better. The crowd interaction was superb & D really vibed off that. The gig was 25% James Brown, 25% PFunk & 50% Prince. He definitely brought some purple funk. He screamed like P, started the Ooh Way Ooh chant & even wore a symbol necklace! The whole dynamics reminded me of the Parade shows. Yes he was that great.
Thank you D for one of the best nights of my life. Can't wait 2 do it all again in Manchester tonight!

A symbol necklace? Really? Exactly the same symbol as Prince used for his name? lol

I was there too, and it was incredible, the funky jams (notably Sugah Daddy and Chicken Grease) were insanely good, probably the best live music moments I've witnessed. My only trouble was, and I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this, was that the sound seemed quite ropey at points. It got better later, but it was a bit of a mess early on, and that spoilt slightly some of the more delicate songs (Really Love and Feel Like Making Love). I'm not that good at describing what's wrong with the sound, but it was really quite swampy (not in a good Voodoo way) and feedbacky at points. I remember that during The Charade Jesse started playing what looked from his hands to be a really great solo, but I could bearly hear it, which was a shame. Ah well, still an amazing night, the annoying thing is now I'm desperate to see him again, and don't know when I'll next get the chance!

I went to the Birmingham show last night too.

I LOVED it. Relaxed atmosphere, great crowd and the band were one of the best I have ever seen. Just brilliant. I prefer the set he did a couple of years ago, but this show was super polished. I loved it.

One thing. The sound was perfect. Not too loud and little to no distortion. Not sure how Prince and his gang find it so challenging in comparison?

Enjoy the show for those going tonight cool

Hooooowwwwww does it feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel ????

Hello biggrin

Where were you positioned? We rolled in at the balcony at the back and the sound was some of the best I've ever heard. Even with his bass heavy grooves, it sounded clean and crisp. Maybe the sound travels better to the top at the Academy?

So I guess we can expect an official release of D'Angelo Live At The Apollo 2015?

Very near to the stage, maybe 7 rows back. Glad to hear it was so good for you, obviously I know that standing so close to the stage is going to make the sound worse, but I was in a similar position when I saw P at the Roundhouse last year and that sounded a lot better than this I thought. Like I said it did seem to get a lot better towards the end and it didn't spoil an overall amazing gig, but the Jesse guitar thing was very noticeable at points (how was the solo in The Charade for you), and Pino's bass occasionally seemed rather loud and distorted at points. I accept this is probably totally due to my standing position, but it was noticeable.

Yes, this is the case.

"The Charade" sounded better (to me) with his previous drummer...

I like John a lot as a drummer too...

..and I've only heard it once per drummer live..

I can confirm that D'angelo and the Vanguard are probably the best live act you can go see at the moment.

Went to the show in Frankfurt last week and I'll also be there in Cologne in March...dude rocked the house like I haven't seen it do anybody else in a long time...the funk jams were unbelievable, the slow jams were just as good..if you have half a chance of seeing this show, don't even think twice.

I haven't been on such a post-concert high since Prince's ONA shows in 2002!

The Apollo show looked tight. I wish I knew why Sony pulled those vids. I hope to God, someone makes a soundcloud for it.

Also, I like this stage set up much better than the one for the 2012 tour, but there is just something missing for me. I liked Black Messiah and D sounds amazing, but I can't put my finger on it.

Another amazing show. I moved to front row balcony with a comfy seat (not that I sat much). So glad that he finally got his shit together. The man is so talented he should be on album 15 not 3!! It was a privilege to see these shows & to see him so damn happy!!

I think that's what I like about D' the most. He's darn good live singer. Most artist these days imo sound good on cd but can't pull it off live.

What difference does it make when D studies Prince like a college entrance exam? I thought D'angelo was his own man but apparently he isn't with that statement.

I think the point was D'angelo shouldnt have a stronger/tighter/funkier

band out on the road than the one Prince has.

& IMO in 2015 he does.. 100%.

What I don't understand is that fans can't accept that these two musicians have two totally different career trajectories and two different musical scopes. Prince can assemble a band like the one you described in a heartbeat, but that's besides the point. What D does is independent of Prince and vice versa and that's the way it should be. The Vanguard is a tight soul band and D's is a soul musician to the core, so he should have a band with tight and funky chops. I think the intention of 3RDEYEGIRL is a female rock trio that plays loose and intense. This is not a contest on which artist has the "funkier" band.
