I don't have too many of Beck's albums, but I HIGHLY rate his two hip-hop influenced collaborations with The Dust Brothers, 1996's Odelay and 2005's Guero.

I've tried 2 listen 2 this guy.

He doesn't move me at all.

I haven't heard them all, but I'm a fan.

Of his albums, I prefer

Midnite Vultures (the closest he comes to a "Prince album")

Sea Change (which could have devolved into a Gordon Lightfoot parody but is a masterpiece)

Guero (to me, Beck's signature album)

I am not crazy about Odelay, and like bits and pieces of The Information and Modern Guilt. The best argument you could have made against Morning Phase is that, on first listens, it has a "been there, done that" feel to it even though it is a sequel to Sea Change. But there's no doubt he's a very important artist and I'm looking forward to future releases.

At the time he was enough of stereotypical 20-something gen-X douche-y type to have fleeting success with a self-indulgent 'slacker' song during the peak of the alt/grudge rock years, then rather quickly became less and less prominent. Let's not pretend that he's on the status level ot Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Jon Bon Jovi, Axl Rose or Billy Joe Armstrong. If Beck is still around and winning Best Album Grammy's for an album no one even knew was out, then someone better clear the way for Coolio to suddenly pick up an Oscar for another soundtrack song attached to a movie about a thug-infested high school. He fell off the radar, once he started to become more experimental musically and started paying more attention to his family. But even the most beginning muso knows the relavancy Beck has had on music.

He's more influential than Cobain, Vedder, Bon Jovi (LMFAO, You added him, really?,) and Armstrong.

Before you try to belittle a mans influence and work, do some research. OR just heed Kanye's advice, that he himself should've taken after the Grammys. "DON'T TALK."

The question is not whether you know who he is, but whether you know his music. You can't speak so definitively on an artist if you're not familiar with his work. I get why you were turned off by Beck more than 20 years ago. I wasn't much older than you when "Loser" came out, and I wasn't interested in following him either. But Midnite Vultures caught my attention years later, and I've bought most of his stuff since.

Let's set aside, for the moment, that Beck has sold millions of albums worldwide and has several platinum albums in the US. You don't strike me as the kind of person who applies the "household name" test to determine the merits of one's discography.

Fair points, most of his subsequent albums didn't produce radio-ready hits, but Midnite Vultures, Sea Change and Guero all went platinum. I think the real issue though, was the merits of Beck's music per se.

You lost all credibility when you mentioned BILLY JOE ARMSTRONG in the same sentence with those people (i'll give you a pass on Jon Bon Jovi, still laughable though). GREEN DAY is great? Exactly. I was blown away by the album when it first came out. But now to it sounds like a parody, a pastiche at best. That's why it ranks low on my top 10 Beck albums.

But I enjoyed his live performances with his band during that era.

When I saw that somebody put MIDNITE VULTURES at #1, it scarried me how his albums must be horrible. Besides SEXX LAWS and DEBRA (which is a cover !) there is nothing exciting in MV. The others songs are average. I even prefer 20TEN
